Words of Inspiration

"If a man empties his purse into his head, no man can take it away from him. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest."

-Benjamin Franklin

A Special Applause to...

Rigorous, relevant learning experiences for students provide for lasting memories. We do a great job of this at the Greene School. I want to say thank you to everyone who arranges for our students to participate in field trips that expand learning from the classroom. I want to say a special thank you to the 5th grade science department who leveraged all of their resources to keep the iSpace field trip alive!

PD on the Fly...

Winter break was long! Getting back into a routine can be tough. I found this acrticle and thought you would find it useful for yourself and your students. The author interviewed 300 high achievers. These are the results! The author wrote, "The choices we make during the first hour or so of our morning often determine what the rest of the day will look like." Enjoy!

Info for the Staff

Bowling Club Dismissal

Bowling Club will be starting again Thursday, January 24th. At 2:45, we will make an announcement for bowlers to come to the lobby. Jennifer or Tracey will walk them out as they go to their duty for the early buses. We will also make an announcement in the morning to let students know of the Thursday bowling dates and to remind students this will be happening.

Team Lost and Found

Many teams have started a team lost and found. At the beginning of the month you will need to send student items to the main lost and found so parents who come in the building can help retrieve their lost items.

PTO Fall Gifting

Many of the items the PTO purchased from the gifting process are being delivered! If you received something from PTO gifting, can you take a picture of it and send it to Matt? We will have another gifting opportunity this spring!

Reading & Math Intervention Info

As you are reviewing your Winter MAP scores, how your students have been performing in your classroom, and interventions you have tried, you may be thinking about the next steps of getting a student additional help in reading and math.

Please see the link below to a document with facts regarding referrals to intervention and a link for the referral.

Please see Marilee or Ann Marie for any questions.

Just a Heads Up!

As you know, the district has partnered with Children's Hospital to provide counseling services to students. The roll out started by placing mental health in the four elementary schools. We are at the point in the process where a search has begun for a counselor to work at the Greene School! I will let you know when we have someone in place. We will be working with our staff on what this role means and how you can refer students for services. More to come!

Upcoming dates for your calendar:

Author Visit - February 20 and 21: Gordon Korman

We will use this section to keep you up to speed as we transition students from the elementary schools and to the junior high.

Rising 7th Graders

This year the JH is changing the course recommendation form for 6th grade teachers to complete. They will no longer use paper copies. HERE is a sample sheet they will use for you to make recommendations. It will be accompanied with criteria for course recommendations and all of the MAP data will be in the sheet. This sample only shows ELA, each content (SS, math, SCI, band, orchestra, and ESL) area will have a tab.

Jr. High Choir tryouts for 6th graders will be held on Tuesday, January 29, Wednesday, January 30, and Thursday, January 31. A schedule of "audition" times will be posted at a later day.

6th grade tours to the Junior High - Change of date: The orientation/tour/lunch at the Junior High for 6th graders will now be on Friday, February 22, 2019. ALL 6th graders will go at the same time and details will be forthcoming. This will take the place of the original tours that were scheduled for April 24 and 25.

The JH counselors will be meeting with every 6th grade student in early March. They plan on coming down for two days. Each day they will work with two teams. Students will be pulled out of social studies class for a short period of time as the three counselors work one on one with students. I will send you a more detailed schedule when the dates are finalized.

Rising 6th Graders

We are making an adjustment to the process used to place students on teams. Here is a message that will go out to parents in the coming weeks. Please let me know if you have any questions.

At the Greene School, we place a high value on relationships and believe that placement with at least one friend assists our students with the transition to the intermediate school. Students are placed by academic, social, and emotional needs. We collaborate with fourth grade teachers and parents to gather information. In addition, we ask parents to list six friends on a student information form that you will receive in February. While we will not be taking parent requests for specific teachers or teams, we will be taking requests for placement with a friend. This friend will be in your child’s homeroom and with him/her at lunch and recess, providing a familiar face throughout the day allowing for continued relationship building at Greene. We do offer a variety of Project Based Learning experiences at the Greene School. Your child will be placed in a team that uses a PBL approach one of the 2 years at Greene.
