The Spirit to Overcome Challenges is Within Us
Two years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Dolores De Higalgo the site of El Grito de Independencia, which started the Mexican War of Independence. This bellow for liberation in the face of mammoth obstacles is an inspiring backdrop for this week's newsletter. While it might seem a stretch for me to connect the dots between a nation's spirit and the spirit that I see every day in our students, I see the connection quite clearly. I see students' perseverance and fight as they overcome their own obstacles and challenges en route to their versions of liberation and greatness. I see it in our team of professionals whose fire seems to burn brighter as their relationships with our students grow stronger. I also hear it and feel it in the stories our students share about difficulties that I wish they did not have to bear. However, we work as a team to utilize those experiences and challenges as motivating factors that can help drive our students to beat the odds and achieve their academic goals and beyond.
As we move toward the close of our first 20 days of school, I reflect back on our students' most successful week yet. A week where our teachers shared personal and emotional stories about their experiences on 9/11, and we welcomed our first three graduates ever. This week we will continue to set expectations and strive for more success, as we continue to Believe in U.
