Principal's Corner with our Principal for a Day, Rachel Rouse

On a normal day I’m a mom to a 6 year old girl and a 3 year old boy and I run the Interiors studio for an international architecture firm. Last week I had the honor of being Principal for a Day at Gooch Elementary. I was delighted to be able to walk through a typical day at Gooch (and catch a glimpse of my daughter’s typical school day.) We have been very happy to have our daughter at Gooch and look forward to bringing our younger son to the school in a few more years.

Spending the day with Principal Ashmore gave me a new respect for all that it takes to educate our kids each day and the challenges that our public schools face. It’s given me renewed determination to bring my company into partnership with our school to improve the experience any way we can. I’ve also been enlightened on how important it is to vote for candidates who strongly support our public school system and will actively work to make it better for all our students.

Arts at Gooch

It has been a great month for the Arts at Gooch. Our first PTSA Painting Night was fantastically well attended with over 40 Gooch scholars and their families coming to paint with Ms. L. Diego Rivera and Our Community was performed by 5th Grade on the 26th of September and it was a lovely presentation of poetry and art. Texas Ballet Theater is currently running Ballet classes for 40 lucky 1st – 4th grade Gooch Scholars, and they are really enjoying it.

Saturday School is Here

October brings Fair Day and Saturday School at Gooch. This year marks the 6th year of Saturday School. We have had all our wonderful volunteers from St. Marks, Hockaday and Greenhill here training to help all of our 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who need an extra boost. We have redesigned Saturday School this year to make it even more effective than it has been. At Saturday school each Gooch student is matched with a mentor from one of the high schools. They read together, play math games together, and then participate in one of the club activities. The clubs that we are starting with are Journalism Club, Environmental Club, Science Club, walkSTEM and Singing Club. A huge thanks to all the volunteers, teachers, parents and students who make this amazing program possible.

On the 26th of October we are having a Math Games night in the Library from 5-6pm. Come and play math games, it's great family fun. On the 31st of October we will be having Halloween at Gooch. Stay tuned for our Halloween scavenger hunt and other activities on the 31st starting at 5pm, and the PTSA general meeting.

The W.T. White Homecoming Parade is happening on the 1st of November. Florencio Perez is leading the Float committee. Send a message to the PTSA through Bloomz if you can help with the float, or your child would like to ride on the float. Lots of hands are needed to plan and decorate the float!

Our first big fundraiser is on the Horizon. Gooch Gators PTSA is organizing a fun run along with the Chapel Hill PTSA on the 10th of November. Help us show that the Gooch Gators can beat the Chapel Hill Chargers! There will be lost of great competitions including a tug of war, the fun run, and all will be followed by a block party with music and other entertainment. 9am-1pm.

Our close friends at Chapel Hill are privileged to be one of the first schools to host the parent education workshop "Be Internet Awesome" to support parents in making their children safer online from Google. The parent workshop works with the child focused internet safety game Interland. They have graciously extended the invitation to all Gooch parents as well. There will be free childcare and dinner provided, and all parents who attend will receive a free dress day pass for their children.

Register here for the Be Internet Awesome program. There are only 75 spaces!
