There are also many FREE events and activities at the public library this summer, such as magic shows, musicians, art activities, and more!

For more information about the Summer Reading Program, or to register, go to the Livonia Public Library website. After clicking the link, point your arrow at Events, and then click Kid and Tween. Next, click the link that says Summer Reading 2023.

Please do not send medication to school without the form. This includes any over-the-counter medications, such as cough drops, aspirin, and sunscreen etc. Because of obvious dangers to other pupils, children are not to carry any medicine with them in school to take at their own discretion, with the exception of inhalers and the principal’s approval.

Honestly, this has been one of my favorite weeks here at Buchanan. We had the opportunity to welcome incoming Kindergarten parents for an information night on Wednesday. They were genuinely cheering them on. I have also watched first hand how hard our 3rd and 4th graders are working on doing their best on M-Step. Spring Break and Week of 4/3-4/7

Its been a great week here at Buchanan. We are finishing up reading month and had an amazing battle of the books on Tuesday. Great job to all the Buchanan Bears that read this month and continue to read over spring break. Students have been working so hard this year and we want to sustain this effort. If your flying, driving or staying home have your child bring a book or journal. Enjoy your time off with your family. I hope you have a safe, happy and healthy week off. I look forward to seeing everyone back on April 3rd.

M-Step Info for 3rd and 4th graders:

Our students have worked so hard this year and now is the time to show that off. Students in 3rd and 4th grade will officially begin the M-Step on April 11. We will test Tuesday - Thursdays for an hour a day. 3rd grade will test from 11:00-12:00 and 4th grade will test from 10:00-11:00. Please help your child by getting them to bed early, a good breakfast and to school on time. Please also if possible refrain from checking your child out during testing times. We have many fun and celebratory events planned to make this a challenge and not stressful. Thank you for your support, we have very smart kids here at Buchanan.

Battle of the Books Thank you!

Battle of the Books was held on Tuesday, March 21. We had 199 students in grades 2-4 on 25 teams who participated in this competition that required students to read specific books and answer questions about each book. Every team worked hard, and we'd like to congratulate all the participants on a job well done!

We could not have held this event without the tremendous help of parents and grandparents who supported this event by leading book study sessions, putting prize bags together, and helping us during the final team battle (including supervising teams, helping with lunch, and helping with cleanup). We would like to thank Buchanan's PTA for their generous support of this event. A big thank you also goes to Buchanan's head custodian, Mr. Miller, for his help both before and during the final team battle. Thank you all very much!

Snack Cart News!

I spoke with the students in the lunch room regarding snack bar and promised them I would include the same info in my newsletter. K-4 students are VERY excited about the snack bar. There are 2 ways to purchase items: 1. Cash (easiest method) or 2. using their lunch account. When getting money off their account, honestly the wait time in line is long, which takes away from their time to eat. Eating lunch is so important to fill stomach so they can learn in the afternoon. There are additional items depending the day but below is a picture of some current options.

Cell Phones and Technology Use:

I understand communication is big for our students and some have phone for safety. However, this is a huge responsibility for not only students but also us as parents.

Below are some tips to help keep our kids safe and keep conflict out of schools:

  • Monitor and discuss with your child who and what they are texting including pictures, videos and statements that they may think are just jokes.
  • Take the time to make sure the apps on your children's phone are age appropriate.
  • Time limits are important to ensure good sleep habits
  • Limit distraction during sleep time, such as charging device outside of their bedroom.

I understand everyone has their own rules and expectations, I am hoping these suggestions keep our children safe and able to focus on school.

Thank you for your help,

Jen Wilson

Welcome Back Families~

I absolutely can't wait to see all the smiling, sweet faces on Monday! I hope everyone had a safe, happy and healthy break! The year has gone by so fast, I just can't believe it's January!

Below are hopefully some helpful tips for a great second half of the year!

Hope to see everyone Tuesday, January 10 @7:00 P.M. for the PTA meeting. We meet in the LMC, child care is available.

January is also hearing and vision testing month here at Buchanan.

OUTSIDE FOR RECESS AND LINE UP AS LONG AS IT IS 15 DEGREES WITH THE WIND CHILL

Children will be going outdoors for recess when the temperature and wind chill combine for 15 degrees or above.

Recess is 30 minutes in duration, so children should be dressed for remaining outdoors for that length of time.

Students will not be permitted inside at morning arrival unless the temperature is below 15 degrees with the wind chill.

Boots are required during inclement weather or the student will be confined to the blacktop area of the playground during outdoor recess when we have snowy or slushy conditions. Warm coats, gloves/mittens, hats and scarves should be worn during cold weather. Your cooperation in sending children to school dressed appropriately is greatly appreciated.

Week of 12/19 - 12/23:

This is going to be a great week here at Buchanan. I love the K-4 atmosphere in the building this week. Students are excited, smiling, and full of joy. I have seen so many genuinely excited faces this week alone through our Santa shop. Students were being thoughtful picking out gifts for their favorite people. This was by far my favorite elementary school memory. I look forward to seeing all the families in and out of Buchanan this week. Whether you are picking up, dropping off, coming to visit, helping in the LMC or class I look forward to seeing you and am so thankful for your partnership. Together we can do GREAT things!

Lastly, I wish everyone a VERY happy, safe and healthy holiday break. We will see everyone back on Monday January 9th.

Kindergarten Savings Plan

The Livonia Public Schools Education Foundation offers a free opportunity for parents/guardians of kindergarten students to sign up for the Competitive Edge Savings Program.

This is a savings account set up through the Michigan Education Savings Program. Families do not invest a dime, but the Foundation starts the account with seed funds and that fund

grows over the course of the student's educational career in LPS. Upon graduation from an LPS school, the student receives a check from the Foundation to assist with future college or

trade school plans!

There is a Feb. 1 deadline to sign up. This opportunity is only for current kindergarten students.

Thanksgiving is next week and a great way to celebrate is by practicing gratitude. Why gratitude? Gratitude changes people to be better. Mrs. Blazek News

The Pandemic has had an astonishing effect on our children. The Zones of Regulation help our children identify how they are feeling. The next step is to teach children what to do when they are experiencing these "Big Feelings." By creating a calm down place at home is a positive way to help your child to regulate his/her emotions and calm his/her body. The following article explains how to create a calm down place and when to use it. Although the article is geared for preschoolers it is applicable for all ages.

Mrs. Wilson's thoughts

Thank you to our families that attended Parent/Teacher Conferences this week. The best way you can support your child to grow academically, socially and emotionally is to stay involved in their education. That means communicating with your child's teacher, ask questions and keep up the positive feedback throughout the school year.

The conference doesn’t end here. You have the right to know, at any time, about your child’s progress. A telephone call or email to your child’s teacher, will allow you to set up an appointment at a time convenient to both of you. Teachers value the interest and opinions of parents.

Halloween- Save the date for the Buchanan Halloween Parade. We will have a parade for grades 1-4 on Monday October 31st @2:45. Kindergarten teachers will reach out with their plans for Halloween.

The PTA has set up a coin war for the U of M versus Michigan State game. The bins are in the front entrance of the school. It's a fun game. Pennies and dollars give points to your team, while silver takes away points from your opponent. Please consider supporting this fun event with your spare change, that will conclude after boo bash.

Send your spare change in in a Ziploc bag labeled with which team you would like it to be put in.

Social Emotional Learning from Mrs. Blazek

These past weeks I had the pleasure of teaching in all of the first grade classrooms. I introduced the children to the Four Zones of Regulation. This helps children first identify that their body is having a feeling. We then practiced naming the feeling and finally we practiced strategies to help us get back to "green" or ready to learn. Once we are able to notice and name these emotions that we are feeling or that someone else may be feeling we are then able to help them. The first grade teachers will use this strategy to "check in" with their students. This will allow them to intervene if a child might need some assistance throughout the day. Children will also be able to use this strategy to help their friends. Building a positive classroom culture is a top priority at Buchanan.

Reminder- No school on Monday 10/3- This is a professional Development Day for our teachers. Enjoy the day, its suppose to be sunny and 63. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Please also make sure you received a conference link from your child's teacher. Virtual or in person is your choice. If you have not seen it please reach out. Conferences are a great opportunity to be an active member of your child's team. We are on your team to help your child socially, emotionally and academically.

As always please reach out if I can be any help or you have any questions, my door is always open.

Meet the Elementary Support Teachers (EST)

As you have seen in many Buchanan Blast's, these wonderful ladies have offered articles and guidance to support students and families. I wanted to take a minute to introduce them.

Mrs. Taylor (looking at the picture on my left) is our academic EST, has many roles, her focus is to help students that need extra reading intervention perhaps out of the classroom. She is a rock star in helping students be successful here at Buchanan.

Mrs. Blazek (looking at the picture on my right) is our Social and Emotional EST. She too has many roles, however her focus is the social, emotional and medical needs of our Buchanan Bears. Mrs. Blazek is very talented in helping students and families here at Buchanan. We are incredibly blessed to have them both here at Buchanan.

Spotlight Class of the week- 1st grade Hurula

Mrs. Hurula's class was working so hard on their special person of the week letters. I stopped in and saw AMAZING first grade writing. Students were using 5 colors in their illustrations, they were using their BEST handwriting and stretching words on their own. This is so great to see on week 4 of school. Go first grade!

News from Mrs. Taylor

Last week I promised to share one of my favorite ways to have organic conversations with my own children that expands their general knowledge. My children and I love to take walks and while we do, we play a game called '3 Treasures'. The goal of 3 Treasures is to find 3 interesting things while on our walk. There are really no rules to this game! Instead, questions are asked and I do my best to give answers and foster that innocent curiosity. Last week my 3 year old spotted a camper in someone's driveway and I promise you there were questions asked until he feel asleep! Play 3 Treasures in the car, on the way to school or at a restaurant! I can't wait to hear what treasures you find!!

State testing letter coming home today

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Last spring, students throughout the state of Michigan in grades 3-8 and 11 took the state’s required assessments M-STEP, MiAccess and MME (includes PSAT and SAT). These assessments are designed to require students to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Many of the subject area tests also require students to write responses and show their work, instead of merely selecting a multiple choice response.

Today, your student will bring home the Parent Report from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) which includes your student’s scores on the 2022 State Testing. The letter will explain the results and additional information and test results can be found on the Michigan Department of Education’s website at www.michigan.gov/mstep.

Tips and Thoughts from Mrs. Taylor ( Academic Elementary Support Teacher)

15 years ago, a seven year old in Kalamazoo practically knocked me off of my chair when he asked me what a butterfly was! Had he never seen a butterfly before?! Had he never read a book about butterflies?! How had he actually lived for 7 years and avoided a butterfly all that time?!

I was emotional about this event because this particular child had so little knowledge about so many common things in our world. What was he being robbed of? The answer is simple, natural conversations.

Our children's natural curiosity and their never ending WHY's are the most perfect times to expand their knowledge and grow their little brains.

Recently I was reading a book about butterflies with my son. He was able to figure out difficult words in the book because he has held butterflies, helped me raise butterflies in the summertime, been to a butterfly house, read books about butterflies, drawn pictures of butterflies on the back of placemats. Now imagine the same student from Kalamazoo reading that book and you will quickly see that he has no chance of keeping up.

Look back here next week to see one of my favorite ways to have organic conversations with my kids.

Weekly news for 9/12- 9/16

Happy Friday! Thank you all for such a great night last night at open house. This is always one of my most favorite nights of the year. It was great seeing all the families and proud students. I hope you enjoyed learning about your child's day here at Buchanan.

As I sit here and reflect about the first week of the 2022-2023 school year, I am nothing but proud and impressed. I am so proud of the kindness I have seen with our Buchanan Bears. I witnessed our older students noticing younger students unsure of where to go or needing help with backpacks, our older students stepped up to help without being asked. This melted my heart. I was also so impressed with the students and staff on Wednesday, our first full day. We lost power for three hours, students and staff made the absolute best of the situation. We even had fun and laughter was throughout the building all afternoon. I am even more excited for a great school year of learning, growing and joy.

Lastly, I’d like to thank the amazing Buchanan PTA, they have been so supportive and visible from Kona with the Kindergarten and of course Open House/ Curriculum night. The students enjoyed the magician so much while parents learned about their child’s classroom. A HUGE thank you to our PTA. Please consider joining the PTA as they have many more events planned for our Buchanan Bears. See below for more details.

Parking Lot Safety Tips

A friendly reminder of parking lot etiquette:

Just a reminder to all parents/grandparents/guardians, that our parking lot can be a very dangerous place while dropping off students at the building so please keep these things in mind:

  • Reduce your speed while entering and exiting the parking lots.

  • The cut off time to use the designated exit lane is 8:40. We do this to ensure the safety of students and other vehicles who need to exit the parking lot.

  • Obey stop signs unless otherwise directed by Bobby. If Bobby is unable to be at the crosswalk, please stop at all times. When dropping off your student, please pull all the way forward. This allows space for other vehicles behind yours to drop off their children simultaneously

  • Be sure your student(s) are packed up and ready to exit the vehicle (backpack, water bottle, jacket, lunch box, etc... all should be easily accessible to your student and staff members).

  • Be cautious of other traffic, especially buses, as you pull away from the designated drop off area.

Thank you for keeping our children safe here at Buchanan!

Playground/ Pick up safely-

Our sweet little kindergarteners are having recess at the end of the day. If you are picking up your child at the end of the day please stay in your car or the front of the building until 3:50. This is for the safety of our children. Thank you!

Tips from Mrs. Blazek

IS YOUR CHILD GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP?

Many children end up extending their bedtimes over the summer. Going back to school is a great time for getting your child on a more consistent sleep schedule. Did you know that lack of sleep can cause loss of cognitive function, concentration difficulties and lower test schools. The following article from the Cleveland Clinic tells you how much sleep your child needs and how to help them get it.

2. If you are unable to access our website, please call the Buchanan Attendance line 734-744-2690 (option #1).
