_____ ALL STUDENTS: Login to Naviance.com. Use this website to research careers, colleges, and financial aid. Your transcripts and recommendation letters are submitted through Naviance!
_____ Community College Applicants: If your plan is to attend Moorpark College (or other community college), then transfer to a 4-year, you will note that in Naviance and apply directly through that college. Please be advised that Community College Applications are not due until the Spring (usually we recommend in March). Please review the IGETC Info.
_____ SAT / ACT: As of September 2021, all California UC/CSU schools are NOT REQUIRING SAT/ACT test scores for admissions decisions, however, test scores could be used when awarding scholarships. It is your responsibility to contact the admissions and financial aid offices for out-of-state or private universities for their testing requirements. Most are test-optional due to the pandemic.
_____ College Applications: Be sure you meet A-G Requirements for 4-year colleges in California (and if applicable, NCAA eligibility for athletics). There are FOUR types of admissions: Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision, and Rolling Admissions. Early Decision is a “binding” agreement! Early Action means priority admission. Be attentive to deadlines (you cannot be late), because colleges are not flexible about admissions deadlines (you do not need to wait for letters of rec or transcripts before you submit your applications).
_____ College & Scholarship Essays: Not all colleges require essays, but it is essential to prepare early and get feedback from teachers/counselors to polish your essays before submitting. Save any essays you write, as you may be able to use them again. Excellent resources are available online (e.g. CollegeBoard, The Princeton Review and U.S.News and The College Essay Guy).
_____ Letters of Recommendation: If your college and/or scholarship applications require letters of recommendation, be sure to give your teachers and counselors at least 2 weeks turnaround time and make sure your Brag Sheet is completed in Naviance. If recommendation letters are not required for your apps, it is still helpful to complete the brag sheet for your own application process.
_____ Counselor Evaluation Forms & Secondary School Reports: Typically these are required for Common Apps. Inform your School Counselor of the deadline dates for your apps! Please be courteous by providing at least 2 weeks advance notice. Requests submitted without such notice are not guaranteed to be completed by the deadline.
_____ Transcripts: It is your responsibility to request official transcripts to be sent to your colleges. Complete the Transcript Request online through Naviance and follow up with your counselor via email. Some schools only require Final Transcripts (e.g. UC and CSU), while others require initial, mid-year, and final transcripts (CommonApp). Any school credit earned outside of SVHS or SVUSD summer school (ie: OFL, Moorpark or other community college), you will need to submit a transcript directly from that institution when requested by the colleges you are applying to.
_____ FAFSA: FREE Application for Federal Student Aid! Apply Online (as early as October 1st, but get it done before the priority deadline of March 1st): www.fafsa.ed.gov! If you are not a US citizen, but have attended school in California for three years, only apply directly for CalGrant through the California Dream Act here: https://dream.csac.ca.gov/ Everyone should apply!!!
For a step by step guide on filling out the FAFSA, click here.
_____ Financial Aid and Scholarship information can be found on our CCC website, as well as all of the Financial Aid websites of your prospective colleges. Naviance also has a scholarship match and list tool!
https://vccf.org/scholarships/
Ventura County Community Foundation awards over one hundred thousand dollars every year to Ventura County High School Students. Research the scholarships and apply! The online application portal opens at the end of November and closes in January. There is even a scholarship that will give priority to Simi Valley residents. Browse the scholarships here.
_____ Choose Your College: Once you have received acceptances and Financial Aid Award Letters (typically by March) from your prospective colleges, then decide on where you want to attend. Make sure you update your school of choice in Naviance, so we know where to send your final transcript by clicking on Home page > Colleges > Colleges I’m Applying to > College I’m Attending.
6. Securing your Letters of Recommendation:
The UC and CSU schools do not require, nor do they accept letters of recommendation. However, many private schools, out-of-state schools, and scholarships schools do.
1. In Naviance, click "COLLEGES" tab at the top > then click "APPLY TO COLLEGE" > then click "LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION" > then click "ADD REQUEST"
2. Select the Teacher from the Drop Down Menu > then Select the Colleges you would like that Teacher to write the letter > then write the Teacher a note > then Click "SUBMIT REQUEST"
3. Repeat for each Teacher you would like to write you a LOR
Each College requests different amounts of LORs.
Once you request your teacher LOR, you will no longer have anything to do with them. The teacher will submit on Naviance and it will be automatically sent to your college application. You can check the progress of these LORs in your Naviance on the LOR request page.
Need a Counselor LOR? = Email & Ask Your counselor to write one for you
...But what if I do not plan to attend a two or four-year college or university and my goals are career or military focused??
