Important Message from the MCPS School System Medical Officer Regarding COVID-19
Montgomery County Public Schools sent the following community message on Tuesday, January 17:
”Dear MCPS Community,
On Thursday, Jan. 12, county leaders shared their concerns about rising rates of COVID-19 in our community. Since hospital admissions for COVID-19 have increased, our county’s community risk level is now at MEDIUM. This stresses the importance of heightened awareness and preventing severe disease in our most vulnerable community members. On our school dashboard, we saw a higher number of positive cases the first week after school reopening, with fewer cases reported the following week.
Everyone should practice healthy habits, which prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses. Here are some other steps individuals can take to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in our community:
Consider COVID-19 risk when making health decisions.
Understand COVID-19 risk so you can take extra precautions in high-risk situations, if you have risk factors for severe COVID-19 infection, or are around someone at increased risk. Adults older than 50 years, pregnant people and individuals with certain medical conditions, including diabetes and asthma, are at highest risk from severe disease due to COVID.Wear a mask to prevent spread of infection, especially in high-risk situations.
Our county health department strongly recommends wearing a well-fitting face covering in crowded indoor spaces. Consider wearing a mask in other situations if you have risk factors, or will be around a family member with risk factors for severe respiratory infection. If you have COVID-19 or have been exposed as a close contact, please mask according to CDC’s isolation and exposure guidelines. Staff and students may be asked to mask temporarily in local outbreak or other high-risk situations.Stay up to date on vaccinations, especially if you have risk factors for severe COVID-19 infection.
COVID-19 vaccines are an important way to help prevent severe infection and are approved for those 6 months old and older. Because the effect of vaccines can wane over time, an updated booster provides additional valuable protection against serious illness for individuals at higher risk.Get tested for COVID-19 if you have symptoms or a possible exposure.
It may be difficult to tell if symptoms are from COVID-19 or another flu-like illness. Testing is an important way to identify individuals with active COVID-19 infection, who can then seek care if needed and also avoid spreading the virus to others. Consider testing before spending time with a high-risk family member. If you test positive for COVID-19:
- Seek advice from your health care provider promptly if your symptoms are severe or if you are at high risk for a severe respiratory infection. Treatments are available that can help prevent severe disease, and are most helpful when given early.
- Follow the CDC’s recommended isolation guidelines to reduce spread to others.
- Staff and students testing positive should report their results using MCPS’ online tool. Reporting results helps MCPS track outbreaks and take measures to reduce further transmission, when an outbreak occurs in our school spaces.
MCPS continues to work closely with the Department of Health and Human Services to monitor data trends and plan health and safety measures. Internally and with community guidance, we are working on reducing the impact of COVID-19 on our school operations. We thank everyone for their continued support in working together to keep our community healthy.
Seneca Valley and Sherwood High School Students and Teachers Partner with CAVA to Create an Elegant Pop Up Restaurant in Potomac for One Night Only
Seneca Valley and Sherwood High School students have partnered with restaurant industry leaders to gain first-hand experience creating an elegant pop up restaurant for one night in Potomac. The event will be the culmination of months of planning between MCPS students, hospitality program teachers Melissa North and Lisa Gilbert, and the Foundation for Hospitality & Restaurant Managements’ (FHRM) Student Professional Development Committee.
“Success starts with a spark,” said Ted Xenohristos, Chief Concept Officer & Founder of CAVA, “And, we’re here to light the match!” The dinner is an opportunity for the students to experience firsthand the wide variety of activities necessary to stage a sophisticated experience—from social media and ticket sales to front-of-house management and heart-of-house hustle. With a team of CAVA chefs, the students will design, prepare and serve a four-course gourmet dinner at the Falls Road Golf Course Café on February 3, 2023.
Jana Anderson, professor and Program Coordinator for the Hospitality Management Program at Montgomery College will coach the front-of-house student volunteers through in person and zoom workshops leading up to the event. “I am inspired by the students’ excitement and seeing this first dinner come together.”
Lizz Durante, President of Payroll Network’s Restaurant People Cloud and a FHRM Cadre, will lead the marketing activities for the fundraiser. The students will participate in two social media workshops led by Payroll Network’s Chief Revenue Officer, Mary Grothe and Becca Bollinger, Marketing Specialist. “We are excited to develop projects that engage MCPS hospitality program students in real-life scenarios like this,” said Ms. Durante.
Alan Squier, President of Squier Associates and a FHRM Cadre is working with the students to transform the café into a white tablecloth, candlelit dining room. “This fundraising dinner is our first,” said Squier, “but it’s not our last. We hope to learn from this experience and improve and expand future student dinners.”
“FHRM and MCPS recognize that teens today want to forge their own success and happiness in their future careers,” said David Child, General Manager of North Bethesda Marriott and FHRM’s President. “The most important thing to them is to do something they’re excited about, regardless of what career they choose. These students are drawn to hospitality.”
“At CAVA, caring, hospitality, warmth and generosity are our pillars,” stated CAVA Founder and CEO Ted Xenohristos. “Giving students the skills to succeed in the restaurant industry and nurture their passion is key to our vision. Mediterranean families have been perfecting healthy eating for 4,000 years. We hope to inspire a new generation to continue this great legacy.”
Student Takeover Dinner Details
Proceeds from the fundraiser will allow FHRM to continue to offer programs like this throughout Montgomery County and give high school students the opportunity to explore first-hand the wide variety of careers in hospitality, work opportunities, and apprenticeships and find ways to engage students and educators in public-facing projects.

This Week's Notes from the SVHS College & Career Center
Financial Aid
If you plan to attend college or are thinking about it, please fill out your financial aid forms! The deadline for the state of Maryland is March 1. It is better to have financial aid and decide not to use it, rather than not apply. There is nothing that can be done if you miss these important deadlines! This includes financial aid to attend Montgomery College!
If you have not already completed, students should fill out the FAFSA (Federal Aid) and MDCAPS (Maryland State Aid). The MDCAPS form should also be filled out if you have applied to schools in the state of Maryland, including Montgomery College.
Students who are not eligible to fill out the FAFSA may be able to fill out the MSFAA (more information in the link below).

The Maryland Delegate Scholarship is offered to Maryland residents who plan to attend (full-time or part-time) a two-year or four-year Maryland college, university or private career school.
