Free Verse

Definition:
poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular meter
it is organized according to the accent of image and speech patterns rather than according to a regular metrical scheme. The first known use of free verse was in 1908.

Function:
-commonly used in contemporary poetry
-some poets take this function as a freedom from rhythm
-gives a greater freedom for choosing words and conveying the poet's meanings to the audience
