America gets involved

The European nations really doubted the United States. They were unsure that the states could raise, train, equip, and transport an army fast enough to influence the outcome of the war. Because of the Americans getting involved the Germans increased the use of unrestricted warfare because they wanted to end the problem before the US made a difference.

After many merchant ships sinking in alarming numbers the Allies addressed the problem with the navy tactic: convoying. What they did was that they sent the merchant ships together protected by warships. This rapidly decreased the loss of merchant ships and the Germans failed to stop the Americans.

Vladimir Lennin

After years of combat, the allies were exhausted and Russia being torn by revolutions was in need of a new leader to bring them up from ruins. That's when Vladimir Lennin stepped inn and took charge. He was the leader of a communist revolution in Russia. He looked at the world as nothing more than an imperialistic land grab. Vladimir exposed treaties with allies that would have them divide up land after the war was over. These treaties were the opposite of what President Wilson wanted, he believed in human rights and that the world wasn't just pieces of land to obtain, it was about freedom and peace.
In January 1918 Wilson introduced his 14 point blueprint about how the world should be run.

The 14 points

1. Open Diplomacy, no private international understandings of any kind

13. establishment of independent Poland, independent polish state should be constructed and include territories inhabited by polish population and insured free and secured access to the sea and guaranteed political and economical independence

14. Association of nations, to secure mutual guarantees of political independence and and territorial integrity to great and small states alike.

Peace conference

In the early 1919 the Allies after having been victorious they held a peace conference in Versailles the former palace of king Louis XIV. President Wilson believed that this meeting was too important to be left to lesser politicians and so he went overseas. Wilson did not bring any leading republicans to join him and this angered them because they had won control of the congress in the 1918 election. Although Wilson Went alone, he was welcomed greater than any king.
