Wrangler News
Week of February 18 - February 24
Principal Message
Welcome,
It's hard to believe that we only have 3 weeks until Spring Break and the end of the 3rd nine weeks. Academically, we are going continue to teach new TEKS and spiral back TEKS that were taught earlier in the year. Please continue to reach out to your child's teachers for tutoring times as needed. We had our first track meets this past week and we have one this week at Wood. Please come out and support our athletes. Also, our Robotics team is competing this weekend. I will update our results when I receive them.
Reminder that Monday is a school holiday. We will see everyone again on Tuesday.
Repeat Announcement: I also have exciting news on a new program that we are going to start using called SmartPass. SmartPass will allow us to do a better job of tracking how often our students are in the hallways, restrooms, water fountains, etc, and not in class learning. It will also give parents/guardians the ability to see how often your student is out of class. Please reach out to me if you have questions or concerns about our new hall pass system. You can also search SmartPass on your favorite browser for more information. I am training the staff this week on the program and then we will start using whole campus.
Important Information: Please remind your students about safety precautions when they are walking home from school. I received information that some of our students that walk home have been stopping at a house that has been handing out sodas to passers by. While this person might have the best of intentions, it is not the safest thing to take stuff from strangers.
Important Tardy Information:
We are having more students tardy to class. We will do more tardy sweeps to help get our students to class on time. Basically on a tardy sweep, ANY student in the hallway during the tardy sweep is assigned a lunch detention. Our students know what a tardy sweep is and what the consequence is but they do not know what day and time we perform the sweep.
Repeat Announcement: If your student walks home, please discuss with them the importance of using the crosswalk and paying attention to the crosswalk signs. Especially at a busy intersection such as Fountainwood and Judson Road. We almost had an accident last week, and I want us to avoid that. We made an announcement last week, and will continue to remind the students.
Please follow me @BradHenze to receive the latest information on everything Wood Middle School. More social media could possibly be coming from me to help spread the word about our great students, teachers, and school.
Wranglers of the Week
Students:
First, we would like to recognize Max Keene with a WOW award this week. Max has demonstrated great integrity everyday when he stays behind at lunch to make sure that all of the sports equipment is picked up. Additionally, Max is polite and courteous to all adults on campus and a true team player on his athletic teams. We are very proud of Max for his positive contributions to the Wood Middle School community.
Staff:
Ms. Flanigan is our WOW teacher of the week. She has put together an incredible month of learning for Black History month. She has planned multiple events for our campus to participate in from a food truck for the staff to dress up days to a school dance. Thank you Ms. Flanigan for all of your hard work.

This week for Black History month, during morning announcements, we are recognizing influential African Americans who have helped to positively shape our nation.

Robotics
Six teams competed in the final Robotics Regional Qualifier on Saturday, February 17th. All teams represented Wood with great sportsmanship. Ms. Brown is very proud of all students and teams this year. Three teams qualified for the finals round and had a great effort placing 2nd, 4th and 5th places in the championship rounds. Two teams had high enough programming skills to qualify them for the championships. Team Blackcatz, Team Computer Crashers and Team Lucky Charms will advance to the Championships on March 2nd. They will join teams CKC, Double Stuffed Oreos, and Prodi-GGGs. The Wrangler Robotics program remains the most outstanding in NEISD and San Antonio. We wish them all the best of luck on March 2nd in the hopes of securing a spot to the World Championships. No matter what they have already proven they are champions of our region and hearts. Go-Robots-Go!

National Junior Honor Society Information
Calling all spring-cleaning people! From now until February 21, if you have any old towels or blankets (without stuffing) to donate to our cause, send them with your student. NJHS (The National Junior Honor Society) is sponsoring a drive so we can give back to the community by collecting towels and blankets to donate to a local animal shelter so the no animal has to sleep on a cold floor. Our goal is the collect 200 or more items. The grade level who raises the most items will get a PAJAMA DAY. The last day to bring towels/blankets is February 21. Drop off point is upstairs near room B2023.

Illness
Guidelines for keeping sick children home from school
Contagious Illness
A sick child who is unable to participate in school in a meaningful way should be kept home to rest and recover until symptoms resolve. Keeping a sick child home also protects other children, school staff, and visiting community members from contracting an illness that can be spread from person to person. Guidelines for returning to school following illness are issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Please be aware of the following guidelines for attending school.
- COVID-19: A student who has tested positive for COVID-19 will isolate at home for 5 days. The day symptoms began is Day 0. If the student never experienced symptoms, the day their positive test was performed is Day 0. The student may return to school after the 5 day isolation if their symptoms are improving and they have been fever free without the use of fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours.
- Fever: A child must remain home with a temperature equal to or > 100.0° F and may only return when they have been fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol or Motrin.
- Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Following a diagnosis of pink eye, a child may return to school 24 hours after the first dose of prescribed medication has been administered.
- Rashes: Common infectious diseases with rashes are most contagious in the early stages. A child with a suspicious rash must stay at home and may return to school after a health care provider has made a diagnosis and authorizes the child's return to school in writing or symptoms have resolved completely.
- Head lice (pediculosis): Students who have an active case of live lice may attend school only after treatment which eliminates all live lice. Head lice do not jump or fly and are most commonly contracted by head-to-head touch.
If you take your child to a healthcare provider for an evaluation of illness or injury, please be sure to request a written letter stating when your child may return to school and any accommodations required upon his/her return.
A healthy school community requires parents and schools to partner with each other. To prevent/minimize local outbreaks of contagious disease, parents must keep children who have an illness that can be spread from person to person at home, and NEISD school nurses will exclude students with symptoms of communicable illness from school attendance.
Medication
When your student’s physician determines it is necessary to administer medication during the school day, the following procedures must be followed:
- A parent/guardian or responsible adult designee must bring the medication to school.
- All medication must be in the prescription/original container clearly labeled with the student’s name, the name and dose of medication, and directions for administration. Parents must provide all medications.
- The Medication Administration Request must be completed by the physician each school year and when there is a medication and/or dose change. Prescribing physicians must be licensed to practice in the state of Texas.
- Only FDA approved pharmaceuticals manufactured in the United States will be administered. Homeopathic preparations will not be accepted.
