Tapping The Power Of Nonfiction: Fast Food Nation and Book Clubs!
In just a few weeks, we will be informational writing! To prepare for our writing unit, we are reading non fiction text. Together, we are using the book, Fast Food Nation to demonstrate and practice non fiction reading skills. We are using text features to look at the whole picture and read deeply.
Nonfiction books contain features such as photos, diagrams, graphs and tables. As nonfiction books become more sophisticated, often so do the text features. In the kinds of books students are reading now, the text features are rarely placed in text as decoration. They serve a purpose, and they often teach new information.
Students are doing an amazing job as we use additional non fiction book clubs to practice identifying the central idea, demonstrating book club behaviors and demonstrating thinking about our reading.
