The health and wellness of students and staff is a priority at CCPS. The District is working closely with the Florida Department of Health-Collier (FDOH) to share information regarding prevention of mosquito-borne diseases with students, staff and parents. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and FDOH maintain websites with up-to-date information related to Zika.
- The Zika virus spreads primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito.
- According to the CDC, only 1 in 5 people infected with the virus will have symptoms. The illness is usually mild and symptoms may include a rash, low-grade fever, red eyes, pain behind the eyes, and joint pain.
- Zika infection during pregnancy can cause a birth defect of the infant’s brain called microcephaly (small head and underdeveloped brain).
- The following measures are recommended by FDOH and CDC to help prevent Zika infection:
- Wear long sleeves and pants, shoes and socks when outside.
- Apply EPA-Registered insect repellent to exposed skin before school.
- Insect repellents are not permitted at school.
- Products with DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus and IR3535 are the most effective and long-lasting.
- Products with 20% picaridin, 30% DEET, or 30% oil of lemon eucalyptus can provide 8 hours of protection.
- Always apply repellent according to instructions on the label and consult with your child’s healthcare provider.
- Drain standing water and cover or remove objects that can collect water.
