Neihardt Community,

My name is Meghan Ranslem and I am a 3rd grade teacher at Neihardt. I am excited to let you know that I will be bringing my dog, Bear, who is now a licensed therapy dog to school for visits starting in March. We got Bear as a puppy and he has grown up with both of our daughters who are 1 and 6 years old.

Bear and I have completed a Therapy dog training program through the National Organization called Love on a Leash this past fall. We passed all evaluations and went on 10 hours of supervised visits within the Omaha community. I have seen the benefits of having a therapy dog in schools. I know the joy and love they bring, not only to the students but also to the staff. The Millard Public Schools has been very supportive of school therapy dogs and there are several within the district.

Bear is a therapy dog, or even better-a school dog, not a service dog. Bear expects students to give him attention if they would like to! We are a certified therapy team. Research shows that a dog can be a calming influence, ease nervousness, and reduce stress. We are aware of any severe allergies in the building and have a plan moving forward. If students with pet allergies choose to pet Bear, they are encouraged to wash their hands or use hand sanitizer right away.

I look forward to sharing Bear with the students, staff, and community of Neihardt Elementary School.
