6th Grade Math & Language Arts
The 6th-8th Grade Math students are participating in a new program called Spring Math. The program provides screeners to assess student achievement. Following screeners, class wide interventions are created and implemented throughout the week. The skills are foundational and will help build students’ skills for more advanced concepts studied in class. This program is designed to make students more fluent in their math skills by working on automaticity and builds the foundation for students to tackle algebra concepts.
6th grade students are currently working on adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. When the class wide goal is met, a new intervention will be created and implemented. Students are working with a partner to complete problems in both oral and written form, before completing an independent practice sheet where we monitor their progress. Ask your student who their partner is and how Spring Math is going for them!
The language arts students are fostering a reading community by participating in literature circles. The students are reading novels and meeting once a week to discuss what they have read and what they took away. Each student has a job that they come back to share with the group such as making connections to the story or using drawing apps to draw scenes from the story.
Library Skills
Did you know that there is Science in the Northstar Library? This week’s 5th grade students reviewed what STEM means in Library Skills. Science, Technology, Engineering & Math are all around the Northstar Library. Students interested in STEM can visit the 500 (Science) and 600 (Applied Science & Technology) sections in this library! The lesson was accompanied by a STEM activity where students were given skittles, a paper plate and a bit of water. They then created a pattern with their skittles on the plate and poured water on them. We discussed what might happen when we put these all together. They then created a pattern with their skittles on the plate and poured water on them. The students enjoyed watching this activity and taking pictures of their finished mini science project.
TAG and Enrichment
At Northstar, 3rd -5th, I took the iPads and found an app that could be used in a creative way for Social Studies at each level. The app used is called Google Earth.
3rd Graders
Where is Carmen SanDiego on Google Earth. I created a sheet that they fill out along the way to record information and clues about different places in the world that Carmen SanDiego is going. Then they have to research those clues to find her next location.
4th Graders
Students are using the DICE tool on the left side of Google Earth. This takes them to completely random places in the world. They research many places and then choose their top 3. They gather information and pictures and create an I-movie sharing what they learned.
5th Graders
Students are using the measuring function on Google Earth. They are finding the distance from Northstar to their house as the crow flies and also taking streets. Then they are finding the area of different states and the population density in each state. They are sharing their information using screen recording and making a movie on the Clips app.

Busy in 1st Grade
First graders have been busy writing!! After reading Curious George at School, our students wrote about things they like to do at school and what they would do to keep Curious George out of trouble.
Students have also been learning and practicing ways to be Bucket Fillers. Kiddos wrote about something they did recently to fill someone's bucket.
Numbers 2nd Grade
Second graders are learning about different ways to write numbers. We did a group activity working with numbers in both standard form and expanded form.
