A special message from Principal Vibar
We had a phenomenal first two weeks of school! Staff are getting to know students; students are getting to know staff and each other and the routines and rituals are being taught school-wide. We had grade level pep rallies sponsored by our PBIS team! Look for video of the rallies in the Ramsey show link in this newsletter!
A few pieces of information that families might find helpful:
1. Students are not allowed to carry backpacks during the day and have been given lockers with locks. Please check in with your student as to their comfort level with the lock, locker and moving from class to class during our six period day. Passing times are three minutes and students often find it a time to connect with friends which ends up making them tardy for their next period. Discussing with your student how they navigate their schedule, bathroom breaks, and stops at their lockers is very helpful.
2. Personal cell phones and technology are not allowed during the school day. We ask that students keep their cell phones off and in their lockers. If students have cell phones out they will be given a warning. If this is occurring multiple times, the cell phone will be taken and returned at the end of the day or parents contacted as it is a continual problem. Ramsey is not responsible for students cell phones should they become lost or missing.
The first six weeks of school is a transitional time for all students and staff. If your student is struggling in some way, please reach out to a teacher, counselor or administrator. We are here to help. Sandy Pothen and Dede Hammond are in the main office and can connect you with the appropriate staff member. I am looking forward to an amazing school year!
MYP update of the week
This week at Ramsey
In Minnesota Studies we have been getting to know each other by working in partnerships, small groups, and introducing ourselves individually. We played our first interactive Kahoot game today, quizzing ourselves on how well we know each other. We have also been building a strong classroom community deciding on class rules together, setting up our class dojo, and getting ourselves organized. Ms. Diaz has been starting to call parents just to check in and let families know how awesome their students are!
In Ms. Fontana's 7th grade ELA Workshop, we finished our introductory presentations and learned about class procedures. We visited the school library or checked out books from the classroom library. Students are expected to bring their independent reading book (from home or checked out from school) to class each day and then bring it home for 20 minutes of reading homework per night (100 minutes per week). Students will record their reading on a homework bookmark, which they received in class on Friday. Students also write a reading response and then bring it back, signed by parents and guardians the following Friday. New bookmarks will be assigned on Fridays.
A note from our PTO
PTO would like to help Ramsey teachers “Give the Kid a Pencil”. Please consider bringing gently used or new, sharpened pencils to our first PTO meeting on Thursday, Sept 22nd at 6:30 pm, immediately following dinner. We will have a basket ready to take donations and distribute to our teachers as needed. Please follow the link to find out more!
SCIT/PTO: Ramsey Middle School has two parent groups that meet monthly! This year we are scheduling both parent meetings on the same night and will provide childcare during both meetings and a light meal in between the two meetings. SCIT - is our School Climate Improvement Team and meets from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the library. We discuss the school climate, look at student data around behavior, and are working to increase parent engagement that reflects our student body. Our first meeting will be open to all parents interested in school climate and ask that you make a commitment to attend the monthly meetings. PTO is our Parent Teacher Organization which meets after the light meal from 6:30-7:30 in the library. The PTO works to raise funds for student activities and family events and celebrations. The PTO also is working to increase parent volunteers at Ramsey and in Ramsey classrooms. I would encourage you to come to the first SCIT and PTO meeting on Thursday, September 22 and see what they are all about! For this first meeting, we are asking parents to call and let us know that they are attending so we can have enough food and childcare available. Please
RSVP with Dede Hammond at 293-8860. We hope to see you there!
For all parents who are interested in being more involved at Ramsey, please see the PTO flyer here! Hope to see you there!

GiveMN is a local nonprofit that hosts fund-raisers for philanthropic giving on behalf of organizations and individuals across the state. While our PTO does a variety of fundraising for Ramsey student activities, this is an easy place to give to the school programming and student activities. Please check it out and let us know if you have any questions!
We at Ramsey have partnered with Buffalo Wild Wings on Snelling for the athletic department!
