Welcome to Leopard Print Studios
Lowell Art Class
April
Hello Lowell Families!!!
Curriculum:
Grade K-2
The focus of the k-2 curriculum is learning about the ELEMENTS OF ART like, line, shape, color, texture and form. We apply these elements into out creative process and use them to guide our discussions. In the studio we also focus on "Thinking like an artist" with an emphasis on PROCESS vs PRODUCT. It is my hope that your littles leave Lowell with a vast array of experiences that build their confidence and skillset. I am proud of the hard work and perseverance of the kiddos. It has been fun watching your littles grow, develop their own personal style!
Grades 3-5
In the 3-5th curriculum we dive a little deeper into Color theory & the Principles of Art like, balance, unity, movement, rhythm and pattern. Students "think like artists" and using seasonal themes to explore various mediums like, watercolor, colored pencils & oil pastel. Students are successful if they can identify primary, secondary & analogous colors and incorporate them into their compositions! Students are successful if they can use the Principles of art to organize their ideas and design a cohesive composition. Students share their work with their peers.
HOW YOU CAN HELP??
This week we had a PBIS Relaunch & reviewed the three "B's" and recognized students for their kind words & deeds. You can help us teach this by talking & sharing ideas as a family, as to how to sprinkle kindness throughout the day. Teaching & re-teaching is so important! We teach the 3, B's here at Lowell! They are: BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL & BE RESPONSIBLE, in all areas of our Lowell community. Your support is be greatly appreciated!
NOTE: At least once a month, I try to incorporate Choice in the studio. Students LOVE this!! The littles especially love the Architecture Center where they DESIGN, BUILD & DRAW with blocks & Legos. Choice centers include: Collage, Drawing, Fibers, Sculpture & Architecture !! Art class is a combination of guided projects & T.A.B. Choice *Lowell is one of the only elementary schools is the district to implement T.A.B. Choice Art, this is exciting for our littles. (read on to learn more about T.A.B.) Students earn choice by completing a mini bootcamp and showing responsibility for their workspace (clean-up). Centers include: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, fibers and architecture. Each week students will share their W.O.W. (wonderful, original, works of art) with the class.
Artfully Yours,
Cynthia Zuknik

About Our Studio!!
Students are regarded as the artist.
Students learn about art and the art world by assuming the role of artist and their own learning. They practice coming up with art problems to solve, asking questions and seeking possibilities in the world around them. Students learn to persevere through difficulties as well as to trust themselves and their own judgement while simultaneously becoming self-directed and organized.
Students choose what to work on.
Students learn best and work harder when they are excited by what they are working on. When students design their own work, they understand why they are doing what they are doing and engage much more deeply with their learning.
Classes begin with a short demonstration or a discussion to inspire new ideas.
Students participate in the day’s demonstration. Some follow the teacher’s lead and try the new idea. Others observe the demonstration, filing the information away for when they need it, and then work on an idea that they came to class with or continue to work on a piece from another class period. Still others experiment with materials to see what ideas they will lead to.
K5-2nd grade choose table centers in mediums such as painting, collage, building and clay/dough.
At this level my kiddos are introduced to different mediums and tools. We learn and practice basic skills through play and exploration. During second semester of 2nd grade students will transition to full T.A.B, will have full access to studios and will begin planning W.O.W projects which are presented every two weeks during share time.
The Benefits of Play
"Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them. Play allows children to create and explore a world they can master, conquering their fears while practicing adult roles, sometimes in conjunction with other children or adult caregivers.."
Tsao L. How much do we know about the importance of play in child development? Child Educ.2002;78 :230– 233
Looking forward to a great year of learning!
