Principal's Corner: PBIS
When students demonstrate their ROARS, they can be rewarded with a Gold Card. Gold Cards are given out by teachers, yard duties, and other staff. Students turn their Gold Cards into a box in the office. Once a month, we pull names at each grade level and these students are invited to a pizza lunch with me. At this lunch, we sign the Gold Card poster, scarf down some pizza, and play games. It is a lot of fun and students enjoy being recognized.
We also keep a count of how many gold cards have been turned in throughout the year. When we came back from holiday break, students were told that when we reached 2000 Gold Cards we would treat them to music and dancing during lunch. Students hit this goal the week of February 13th and earned their dance party! (SEE ABOVE PIC)
Our new goal for the next 1000 gold cards is to earn a picnic lunch on the lawn. Once we reach this goal, students will be able to bring their lunches out to the grass and eat with their friends during lunch recess one day.
Our PBIS program is just one of many ways we work with our students to make good choices and have fun doing it.
Traffic Alert: Major Construction coming to Coleman Ave
The City of San Jose Department of Public Works notified us last week that they will be beginning a major project to repair old underground sewer lines that run the length of Coleman Ave between Camden Ave and Redmond Ave.
This work will definitely have an impact on our school drop off and pickup. At this point, we know that the lanes will be adjusted to accommodate the work and turning on and off Coleman will be more difficult. In addition, there will be no parking or pick up/drop off on Coleman Ave. This will impact our families that attend Champions.
Work is set to begin next Monday on March 13th and could potentially run for a couple months. We need your help to minimize the impact this has on our school and community.
Here's how you can help...
- Plan ahead. Give yourself extra time in the mornings to get to school. Tardies will still be enforced so set those alarms a little earlier and look for alternate routes.
- Be patient. I am certain that this will be frustrating at times and how you respond is critical. We all will be going through this together so lets extend extra measures of patience to each other.
- Respect our neighbors. If you are parking on the street, please do not block driveways or trample through planted areas. If you see trash, pick it up.
We can work together to minimize the impact this has our our Guadalupe community.

Superintendent's Message
Later this Spring, students in grades 3 through 8 will participate in the third year of CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) testing. These assessments measure students’ knowledge of the academic standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics, as well as their ability to think critically and analytically. The ELA and Mathematics portion of the assessment is often referred to as the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium.)
Students in grade 5 and grade 8 will also take the new California Science Test (CAST), which assesses students based on the Next Generation Science Standards. This is a pilot year for the CAST, so while students will not receive scores, the state of California will use the experiences and feedback of districts across the state from this year and next year to develop the operational assessment for the 2018-19 school year.
Union School District’s testing window will be between April 17 and May 19, 2017. Each school in the district develops a schedule within the district window, and will communicate site-specific testing information out to parents and the community.
As parents, you can support your child during testing, by making sure they arrive on-time to school, and have had a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast. If you would like to learn more about the assessments, there are a multitude of resources available to you.
