What Are We Learning This Unit?
UOI
This Unit of Inquiry will touch on both science and social studies concepts. The overarching question is are we a product of our environment, our genetics, or both?
First, we will explore the concept of culture and the role it plays in forming our identity. We will look at what makes up a culture.
Second, we will look at genetics and what kind of information can be found in our DNA. We will do a couple of activities involving inherited traits which should be a lot of fun for the kids. We will distinguish between inherited traits, acquired physical traits, and learned behaviors.
Math
We are also learning about decimal fractions. We are looking at the connection between fraction and decimals and how to represent numbers as decimals, fractions, expanded form, and unit form. We will end this unit with comparing decimals and learning how to add decimal numbers. See the links below for more information about decimals.
English Language Arts
We have been writing about personal experiences about ourselves and family members. We will be writing daily, learning how to write narratives about real experiences using good writing techniques, strong details, and clear event sequences.
In reading, we will use details from stories to figure out the theme and continue practicing summarizing the text. We will explore the difference between first- and third-person narration in different stories. We will also look at how similar themes and topics (like good vs evil) and different events are treated in folktales from different cultures. We will explore these concepts through the folktales Fire on the Mountain by Jane Kurtz and The Weaving of a Dream by Marilee Heyer.
