Weekly Update 3.1.20
Joan MacQueen Middle School
Principal Message
Hello Alpine! This is Joan MacQueen's Proud Principal Casey Currigan hoping that you had a phenomenal weekend. March is here, and next week we will move our clocks forward an hour as Daylight Savings begins.
A huge thank you goes out to Loretta Bagee, Jessica Manning, Shannon Thornton, Diana Tompkins, and her ASB students who came early to decorate for our 5th-grade tours. Wow! The school looked fantastic. Those looks translated into a phenomenal performance by each one of our student tour guides. I am so proud of the 7th and 8th grade students who led our incoming fifth graders around Joan MacQueen. The feedback was super positive, and we look forward to welcoming all of those students onto the campus in August.
This Wednesday evening, we would like to invite all of the parents of our incoming 5th graders to campus for Parent Night. The evening will begin at 6:00 pm in the Joan MacQueen Gym on March 4th.
6th-grade camp is also fast approaching, and our kiddos are chomping at the bit to get to camp. To make the drop off on Monday as simple as possible, I would like to invite families to drop off luggage at the Gym on Sunday, March 15th, between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. The bags will be stored in the gym overnight and loaded on our luggage truck first thing Monday morning. The next day families can drop off their 6th graders to school at the regular time without having to carry the luggage with them.
Lastly, as a reminder, students only receive the full benefit of their education when they are consistently present at school. This month Joan MacQueen's attendance rate dropped 5%. Some of this we can attribute to student illness. Please make sure to follow the guidelines set forth by the CDC to stay healthy. If you have concerns about your child's attendance, do not hesitate to give us a call.

Jr. Wildland Fire Safety Day
Every year Wildland Fire Fighters take the Rt-130 Wildfire Safety Class. This Class allows Fire personnel to work safely behind Fire Lines.
The Jr. Wildland Fire Safety Day is an event that will allow kids and their parents to experience the Rt-130 training that Fire Fighters go through every year.
Phones on Campus
We are all aware that middle school in 2020 is not the same as when we grew up. Today, cell phones, while powerful tools for learning are also often used to spread negative messages instantly. In order to do our part in reducing the impact of social media on students, phones will need to be shut off and placed in backpacks during the school day.
Students with visible Air-pods, phones or other electronics out during school will have those items confiscated and they will need to pick them up in the office after school. If the confiscation of their electronics becomes habitual those items will be held in the office for parents to collect. As always, thank you for your support.
