First Grade weekly Update

January 15, 2016

Reading

Our new reading unit is start next Wednesday, January 20. We are excited to begin this unit on social studies lessons. The students will be reading and learning about being in a community, basic map skills and reading about family traditions. We will be reading non fiction and fiction stories to introduce these new concepts. Please encourage your child to read with you each evening.

Math

Shapes and Fractions

In math class we have been working with 2D and 3D shapes. We have been learning about edges, faces, and vertices. We worked on the mini iPads this week and went on a "shape hunt". The kids are very engaged with this unit and continue to work hard on their addition and subtraction facts. We have assessed the students on their fact fluency and will be sharing that information with you at parent conferences in February.

Writing

Next Tuesday we will begin our new writing unit on Opinion writing. This is a fun and exciting unit where students will get to share their own opinions on a variety of topics. Please have your child bring in a personal collection by next Friday. Some past collections include: rocks, coins, stickers, books, figurines, etc. Students will have the opportunity to share their collections with the class. Students will then write about their collections and give opinions. Thanks for your support.
