Daily's Take on Salt to the Sea
Y'all...this book is phenomenal! Written from the alternate viewpoint of four characters from Germany, Poland, East Prussia, and Lithuania, it tells the story of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a refugee ship fleeing the advancement of Russian troops during World War II. Part of Operation: Hannibal, the W. G. was hit by Russian submarines hours after setting sail, killing over 9,000 mostly women and children. It was the most deadly ship sinking in history--larger than the Titanic and Lusitania COMBINED--yet it was never reported, never advertised, never published...anywhere. As tragic as it is, most have never even heard of the W.G.
Even though the book itself is a work of fiction, I loved that I learned about a piece of history that I didn't know. Sure to be a captivating read for lovers of both fiction and nonfiction, Salt to the Sea will not disappoint!
