We have just finished another successful Veterans Week at Munson Elementary. We provide a variety of activities and experiences to help students and families learn more about and honor our veterans, both through classroom experiences and family activities outside of school. Here are a few highlights from our week!
-Students contributed to our bulletin board display with pictures of special veteran family members and why these veterans were important to them.
-Students, families, and staff filled over 100 stockings for veterans in conjunction with the DeJohn's Funeral Homes Stockings for Soldiers project. (We even had a parent offer to take and fill ALL the stockings that were left after requested stockings were sent out!)
-Many students participated in the Veterans Bingo game with their families and returned completed game sheets for a prize.
-We held our annual Penny Wars and through the kind generosity of our Munson students and parents, we raised $2,691.55 for veterans charities. This is a new record!!! For the first time ever, we had so much money to count that we were unable to announce our winner until Monday. Congratulations to Mrs. Hardman's class for their victory; they will receive a party of their choosing from the PTO!
-Our Little White Table was set up in the main hallway, as well as a Thank You Veterans bulletin board with pictures depicting the different branches of the military and the tools and equipment they utilize to do their jobs.
-Third graders spoke on the morning announcements all week sharing facts about veterans and Veterans Day.
-Teachers provided even more veteran themed classroom experiences throughout the week.
-The high point of our week was on Friday afternoon when we had the honor of having 8 veterans visit with students, sharing their experiences in the military and answering students' questions. Our visitors were Marcus Schott (father of 1st grader Leona), Ryan Tasler (father of 1st grader Landon), Doug Davidson (uncle of 2nd grader Owen Gaspar), Steve Szeredy (grandfather of 2nd grader Reese Cubranich), William (Chris) O'Dell (grandfather of 2nd grader Elora Smith), Mike Gonzales (father of 3rd graders Abran and Leo), and Joel Ovanic (father of 3rd grader Ethan and 1st grader Avery). Our most heartfelt thanks go out to these veterans and their families.
The Veterans Day committee (Mrs. Burress, Mrs. Dinko, Mrs. Cohn, Mrs. Soulsby, Mrs. Turk, Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. Diehl, Mrs. Romans, Mr. Prezioso, and Mrs. Thomas) would like to thank all Munson students, parents, staff, and the PTO for making it a successful and informative week of learning about and honoring those heroes who have given so much for our country!
