SLCS District Update
10.21.2021
Note from the Superintendent
Greetings SLCS Families and Staff Members!
It has been nearly sixteen months since I started in my role as the SLCS Superintendent of Schools. I came to the District with some understanding of its strong reputation based in part on a supportive community, strong programs, and dedicated staff. During my short time here, I find myself filled with immense pride for the opportunity to lead such a dynamic school community.
As a District, we are only as strong as our staff members. SLCS is a great place to be and our staff makes that happen. We are fortunate to have an incredible staff that supports our students as they work to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful during their school experience and be prepared for life after SLCS.
Our principals and teachers do tremendous work to provide the instruction and experiences needed for students to grow as learners. We also have a number of support staff that work tirelessly to make our days run smoothly for our students and other staff members. This includes our office staff, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, custodians, building engineers, guest teachers, food service staff, and grounds and maintenance staff. In addition to our exceptional academic and extra-curricular programs, our facilities are exceptionally well maintained.
SLCS is a place where individuals should want to work, where students should want to attend, and parents should want to send their children. In my humble opinion, there is no more meaningful work than working in schools on behalf of our students. Along those lines, we are looking for new staff members to join our team. Join the SLCS family and help build promising futures!
SLCS Proud!

Pathway Changes
Special Education
Parent Advisory Committee (PAC)
Calling all Parents of Students with Special Needs:
As you may know, the South Lyon Community School District is overseen by Oakland County Intermediate School District (Oakland Schools). One of the many plans that Oakland Schools has involves the Plan for the Delivery of Special Education Programs and Services. This plan specifies that each school district in the county will appoint representatives for the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee. The parent committee members will each serve a three year term. The commitment is one evening per month. It is currently necessary to select a new representative for South Lyon Community Schools.
For the past three years, Kristen Phipps has been serving as our PAC Representative. Her term has ended and we thank her for all of the hard work and dedication that she has provided for our community. We appreciate her advocacy on behalf of our families.
With Ms. Phipps’ term having ended we are initiating our process to fill her position; All parents of a currently enrolled South Lyon Community Schools student with a special need (student must have an active IEP) are invited to apply for the position by stating their interest via email: toths@slcs.us on or before November 17, 2021. An informal interview panel will be created to meet with the applicants in order to select one representative.
The recommended candidate’s name will be submitted to our Board of Education for appointment on behalf of our District. Oakland Schools Board will process our nominee to finalize their appointment to the position. Once finalized, our representative will attend regularly scheduled meetings with other Oakland County parent representatives.
This is an opportunity for our district to be heard at the county level on behalf of our children. Please seriously consider submitting your letter for this important position.
