TEA Social Studies Updates
Holocaust Remembrance Week
SB 1828 instructs the Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission (THGC) to develop or approve materials for a statewide Holocaust Remembrance Week, starting in the 2019-2020 school year. At the THGC’s suggestion, the Governor’s Office has chosen the week of January 27, 2020, as the date for Remembrance Week. (International Holocaust Remembrance Day is January 27, which is the date that Auschwitz was “liberated” by Allied troops.) Acknowledging that Texas students are best served when educators have choices in the shaping of instruction, the THGC leaves it up to individual school districts to observe Holocaust Remembrance Week by selecting from any of the items listed/linked on the THGC webpage for Holocaust Remembrance Week.

TEKS RESOURCE SYSTEM DISTRICTS - DID YOU KNOW?
The resource is viewable when you search for a course and look at all of the resources. We are steadily adding a link in the resource section of each individual IFD. Just to remind you, we did not vet or read any of these books. We leave it to the good judgment of teachers and school leaders to choose what books may be most appropriate.
RESOURCES & WEBSITES

This 6,000 page reference center is dedicated to providing information to the general public on African American history and the history of more than one billion people of African ancestry around the world. We invite you to explore and use all the resources of BlackPast.

FinCamp by Next Gen Personal Finance
Who is NGPF? Why is this free? What's the catch?
Next Gen Personal Finance ("NGPF") is a non-profit team of former educators delivering free personal finance curriculum, professional development and advocacy support to over 10,000 teachers nationwide. Since launching in 2014, NGPF has quickly become the one stop shop for teachers who believe their students learn best by doing.
We have an endowment created by our co-founder which funds our operations so we do not and will not charge for our curriculum or professional development. Our mission is to revolutionize the teaching of personal finance in all school and to improve the financial lives of the next generation.
What's the catch? There isn't one. Seriously. We think it's time teachers got the respect and support they deserve, and what better way to put our money where our mouth is than to give everything to teachers for free, forever.
You Should Know:
- Teachers of Personal Finance, Econ, Financial Math, Family & Consumer Science, Special Education or any other practical, real-life course are ALL welcome
- Substitute stipend available for schools & districts
- Breakfast & lunch provided
- REQUIRED: Bring a laptop and charger
