IS BEING "BUSY" OUR NEW STATUS SYMBOL?
Roberts,
How do we slow down? Is that actually possible given our current stage in life? One of the biggest problems as leaders is that we allow our busyness to be our status symbol. We like the fact that our lives are so busy. If your coworker or a family member asks how you are doing, do you respond, “I'm so busy!”? We are so proud of the status symbol of being busy and we wear it with honor. It is almost now a default cliché, because it has become part of our ingrained identity. In fact, it would be peculiar to tell someone, “I am on top of stuff, and I am hanging out with the family more.”
You have to start your day by blocking time to just think and focus on what matters. If you don’t dictate what goes in your calendar, then other peoples’ agendas will fill those pages. Do you ever intentionally put in time to help others or tell someone how much they mean to you? In the same manner, if you do not tailor instruction to meet the needs of your students, you will waste time that matters. Never convince yourself that you are too busy to look at each student’s individual data. Analyzing student by student data is a game changer in education. Giving each student a challenging and personalized lesson must be our priority. As always, I am challenging your thinking. I want you to take the next level of growth.
I am glad to be back from my workshop in Austin. I will be coming by each of your classes.
