Counseling Connection
Academic Advising Edition
Academic Advising Season is (almost) Here!
Welcome back! We hope you are enjoying 2020 so far. The counselors are beginning the slow journey into academic advising. Right now we are doing credit checks for our students and gathering materials for a smooth registration period.
There are a few things to keep in mind during this time:
- Graduation requirements are different for current juniors than for sophomores and freshman.
- Hylton offers a TON of fun electives to choose from (check them out during the curriculum fairs at lunch on 1/16, 1/17)
- Counselors have high traffic this time of year, and it may take a minute before you can reach us.
- Electives and schedule changes are welcome until the last day of school. That gives you almost 3 whole months to change your mind! After that- no changes.
- If you are in a specialty program- you have required classes (CISL, TV, Auto, Cabinetmaking)
- Some classes require an application. Your counselor can give it to you when you schedule with them, but the applications get returned to the teacher of the class (yearbook, AFJROTC)
- Specialty program applications are NOW OPEN! They are due 2/1
Current Juniors
Above are your graduation requirements. You still need 9 SOLs for an advanced diploma, and 6 SOLs for a standard diploma. The above graphic outlines which classes you need. But don't worry! Your counselor is on their "A" game and will help make sure you have everything you need.
Current Sophomores and Freshmen
Above is your graduation requirements. Congratulations- you only need 5 SOLs no matter what diploma you are pursuing. The same number of classes still apply to each diploma type. But don't fret! Your counselor will help you decide which classes are best for you.
Teacher Recommendations
Counselors utilize teacher recommendations to create your schedule. Teachers know your academic abilities because they are with you every (other) day! Students, talk to your teachers ahead of time if there is a specific class you are passionate about taking.
