September 8-12

Bulidings! We will be discussing buildings in September. This week we started with the basics. What we know and what we want to know. We have looked at some pictures and talked about buildings that we know about. Please send in any pictures of buildings you may have.

We are taking TWO class trips next week!

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16th we will take a walking trip to The Replex. We will be looking for specific features inside this community building.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18th we will be taking a bus to visit the fire station. Again, we will be looking for specific things on this trip.

Our plan is to do some comparing between the two buildings. Some things are the same and some are different. We will soon see what those are!

WHICH HAS MORE: We used dice to determine how many blocks to use to make a tower. We counted and used comparison words.

DINNERTIME: We used housekeeping materials and set the table for a "party." We talked about what we needed and how to make sure everyone has the same things.

COUNTING AND COMPARING: We did some counting and sorting with manipulatives.

ABC CARDS: We used wooden pieces and letter cards as a large group. The kids learned if they need to use big lines, small lines, big curves, and/or small curves.

STORY RETELLING: We re-told the story of The Three Little Pigs. They loved "blowing the house down."

The Three Little Pigs: We have a video version of this story as well!

Changes, Changes: A book with blocks. They keep adding and moving blocks to make different structures.

Keep Counting: This story starts with a building. Each page something else is added to the street.

The kids really enjoy the interactive program on the SMART board. We have done the S and the A sounds so far. You may see some worksheets come home with these letters on them. We do not generally do worksheets in our classrooms. These are an exception. They are not forced upon them, just out in our writing areas for those interested.

You should have received the calendar. Watch for the bag to come home the Friday before your child's day! This month's topic is "Tell me about a time you visited a building or structure." Remember...the bag will come home the Friday BEFORE your week! Thanks so much!

Weather is changing. We DO go outside everyday unless weather is really yucky! Please dress your kids accordingly.

Please label all new fall jackets. Kids know their clothes at home, but get easily confused when they have a cubby area of so many different coats and bags!

Extra clothes in the backpacks need to be updated seasonally!

Your child will be bringing home a plastic bag with cut outs of paper blocks in there. This is the reading program we discussed at orientation. We need you to write the titles of books you read on each block and return them in the bag when you are done. Please make sure your child's name is also on the block. We will hang these on our book board outside our classroom. When each study is over we will do two things. We will have a group celebration for EVERYONE as a reward reading at home. Each child who has at least one block on the board will receive an individual prize for participating that month!
