Team 8-2 News
Mrs. Bense, Mr. Frazier, Mrs. Madera, Ms. Waxman
Week of April 30- May 4
Happy Monday !
Today all of our 8th graders got an opportunity to take a "sneak peek" at what is ahead for them next year at the high school. CCHS administrators, counselors, and current students were on hand to welcome us. They shared the rules and expectations, gave us a taste of what the performing arts groups have to offer, and showed us around the campus. They were also there to answer any questions and concerns that the students may have had. Our kids were very well behaved, and seemed to be excited about what next year may be like for them. By the time we got back to school however they were exhausted, and struggled to get through the rest of the day. Please tuck them in early, because we have a lot to accomplish, and only 3 1/2 weeks left to do it!
Thank you for all your help and support during our EOG testing weeks. We truly feel like everyone took these tests seriously and gave their best efforts. However, we won't know the results of those efforts for a bit. With that in mind, we do want to prepare our students who may need to complete a retesting opportunity offered to our 8th graders who may fall slightly short on the ELA or Math sections. Arrangements have been made to offer some additional support in both reading and math for some students based on their performance on other testing completed this year. This will begin tomorrow, with further information coming soon.
We would appreciate your help with our Title I survey below:
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Please complete the SMMS Title I Parent Survey. This survey provides you an opportunity to give us feedback, and the results of this survey help us plan for next year. The link is below, and the survey should only take a few minutes to complete. We really appreciate your feedback and support!

Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week in Language Arts:
We will be taking a closer look at the evolution of the Space Program, as all of the content areas delve deeper into our PBL unit on Rocketry. We have already begun reading our last class novel, Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream, by Tanya Lee Stone. We will follow these women on their almost journey which was blocked by prejudice, jealousy, and a note from one of the most powerful men in Washington.
Today we also introduced their final projects which will be due on May 15th. The students may select one of 3 different research/ writing tasks which will then be presented in class during our last full week of school. Each project will have 3 separate graded components.
One last quick reminder that this quarter students have been asked to complete a "Triple Play". Three books of their choice: one must fall in the upper end of their personal Lexile range, one should be STEM related, and the last is completely their choice. Books 2 and 3 will both be due by this Thursday, May 3rd.
These must be completed between March 22-May 3rd to be eligible to enter in a special drawing. Prizes include Visa cards, Book Fair gift certificates, and more. The remaining two books need to be completed by May 3rd. Remember... Students who READ SUCCEED!
There is NO TweenTribune homework this week.
Science- Mrs. Madera
Physical Science
This week students who have not yet presented their Sports Clip Voice Over Projects in class will have the opportunity to present.
We will also continue to review Electricity and Magnetism for the Mastery Assessment which is scheduled for this Friday, May 4th.
Social Studies- Mrs. Bense
Also, double check Google classroom for some remediation work that should be completed.
Mr. Frazier
This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will continue working on systems of equations. We will take our Unit Test: Systems of Equations on Wednesday. Please ensure your children are studying and take these last 3 weeks serious. We will take our Unit 7 Master Assessment on 11 May, which also covers Solving Systems of Equations.
The remainder of our time will focus on preparing reviewing material for high school. We will start with operations with fractions and solving linear equations that include fractions. Your children have learned how to solve linear equations this year, but according to the high school teachers, they have trouble when they involve fractions. This review will help your child’s transition to high school mathematics much easier.
