Language & Communication

modern language Vs. newspeak

Language doesn't change how people think, it only changes communication.

Limiting the range of language does not change how people think, it merely changes the ability to express ones emotions. verbal communication would be very difficult if there are no words to express how you feel. There are ways to express yourself but in a different method than through verbal communication.

If a government were to try to control people by limiting language, people would continue to speak their native language despite what the government tells them to do. There are many cultures were they speak the same language that has been spoken for hundreds of years. This is proof that limiting the vocabulary of a language will not control people.

"don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can be needed will be exprssed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidary meaaning rubbed out and forgotten." (1.5.23, syme)

Thought: By curtailing frivolous and "frightening" words, thee party seeks to narrow the range of thought altogether, such that eventually thoughtcrime will be literally impossible. The same goes for disruptive or subversive behavior.

"By 2050, earlier, probably - all real knowledge of Oldspeak will have disappeared. The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron - they'll exist only in newspeak versions, not merely changed into something different, but actually changed into something contradictory of what they used to be. Even the literature of the party will change. Even the slogans will change. How could you have a slogan like "freedom is slavery" when the concept of freedom had been abolished? The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking - not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness." (1.5.30, Syme)

Thought: The party, in controlling and manipulating language, seeks to ultimately make thinking innately pure - void of rebellious concepts.
