Update From the Executive Director
LABOR DAY
Labor Day is one of my favorite weekends of the year. No better example to reflect Dr. Martin Luther King's quote above than being a school administrator. Enjoy the extra day on Monday and then hit it again on Tuesday "uplifting humanity" in your school community.
FRIDAY NIGHT
For those of you hosting football tonight or traveling to your first away contest, or supervising your student section, enjoy the start of an exciting time of the year with fall activities. It is a great time to connect with your stakeholders. It is also appropriate to remind students and parents of sportsmanship expectations.

TRAVELS THIS WEEK
Doug attended the Northwest Meeting in St. Joe on Wednesday. I attended the South Central meeting on Wednesday and visited Owensville HS and MS. See the great things these schools are doing below.
INVITE A MISSOURI LEGISLATOR TO YOUR SCHOOL OR REGIONAL MEETING THIS FALL
MoASSP President Marc Spunaugle, Principal of Lincoln HS and MoASSP Board Member, Brandon Harding, Principal of Cole Camp HS traveled to Stockton HS Wednesday. Stockton HS Principal Mike PostlewaiI hosted the event for U.S. Representative, Vicky Hartzler. I have included pictures and additional information below. Last week, several of us listened to a webinar with NASSP officials regarding advocacy. Thanks to NASSP State Coordinator, Chris Hoehne and MoASSP Board Member, Jeff Meisenheimer, for also attending. The webinar provided excellent ideas on why and how to host a legislative visit to your school.
The fall is an excellent time to start or strengthen a relationship with your elected official(s). You will help to educate them on important issues before the legislative session begins in January. Having them interact with staff and students will also provide essential insights for them. As they deliberate on educational issues during the legislative session, they will reflect on their visit to your school. FIND YOUR LEGISLATOR: Enter your home or school’s address for a list of state and federal legislators in your area. Write a letter or email inviting them to visit your school. If needed, follow up with a phone call. Our MoASSP office will assist you in scheduling and coordination. Call us at 573-445-5071. Once you have them scheduled, please share with us the date they are coming.
Whether you are aspiring, emerging, developing, or transformational, wherever you are on the “Principal’s Journey," it is a “matter of principal(ple).” Clark Mershon
MoASSP Action Center...WE NEED YOU! Lets be ready for the next legislative session that begins in January.
- home address
- cell number
- personal email (not school)
- You will then receive a text message from 528-86 with the following message: "Reply YES to confirm your subscription to Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals Action Center.
It is that simple. You do not have to send a message to your legislator to become an advocate. When we have an action item that needs support, we will be ready to act.

DR. RICHARD PHILLIPS VISITS MoASSP OFFICE
This week, we had the pleasure to visit with Dr. Richard Phillips. Richard is a longtime Missouri educator and administrator. Although he is enjoying retirement, he is on a mission to help develop better lines of communication between and among retired administrators. Richard is also actively involved in championing the preservation of our Public School Retirement System (PSRS). He attends MRTA Legislative Day. He visits regularly with Jim Kreider, Executive Director of MRTA. Richard believes all retired administrators need to be members and support MRTA. We have included more information below about MRTA. We appreciate Richard and his continued involvement in educational matters here in Missouri. If you would like to connect with Richard, you can email him at pkeycon@swbell.net
MISSOURI RETIRED TEACHER ASSOCIATION (MRTA)
Plain and simple, we need to protect what we have in the Public School Retirement System. MRTA is the only association where the education retiree is the number one priority. According to Jim Kreider, MRTA Executive Director, MRTA has now over 27,000 members strong and growing. MRTA is a group of retired educators with the time and the passion to vote and to advocate for public education. MRTA works to protect and enhance the pension benefits of all Missouri Retired Educators present and future. Click here to find out more.
CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) CERTIFICATE CRITERIA CLARIFICATION
Roger Barnes, Coordinator
DESE Career Education
Item 8 states:
Achieve a score at or above the state standard on any department-approved measure(s) of college and career readiness, for example, the ACT®, SAT®, ACT-WorkKeys®, or the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery as determined in the most current MSIP performance standards. Schools are to use the .75 weighted measures described in the Assessment Scores Matrix as the standard. This matrix is found in Appendix C of the MSIP 5 Comprehensive Guide to the Missouri School Improvement Program, 2016.
The 2018 MSIP 5 Guide, page 10 Performance Standards for K-12 Districts, item 3a, 3b, and 3c states: “…any department-approved measure(s) of college and career readiness, for example, the ACT, SAT, COMPASS or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), …”. Since the COMPASS test is no longer applicable, Accuplacer now takes the place of the COMPASS when considering achievement at or above the state standard on any department-approved measure(s) of college and career readiness. The Class of 2021 will be the first graduates eligible to earn the CTE Certificate. If you have any questions email Roger at roger.barnes@dese.mo.gov.
