Roberts Middle School
Aviator Agenda: March 7-11
Does every Instructional Minute Matter?
The German Blitzkrieg was one of the most intimidating forces in modern warfare. In WW II the Germans wanted to avoid the drawn-out trench fighting of previous wars, so they concentrated mobile divisions into rapid, narrow offensive forces that caught their enemies completely unprepared. In the weeks and months after the successful invasion of Normandy by Allied forces, they faced it again: a set of massive German counteroffensives. How could they stop it? Would it throw them back to the very beaches they just won? General Dwight D. Eisenhower took a different path after the invasion of Normandy. At Allied headquarters in Malta, Eisenhower told his deflated generals, “The present situation is to be regarded as opportunity for us and not disaster.”
Instead of flinching or making excuses, Eisenhower searched and found the opportunity inside the obstacle rather than allow himself to become overwhelmed by the obstacle.
This is an example of the role our own perceptions play in our ability to overcome obstacles. Roberts Family, we have come this far in preparing our students to be successful in their academics. The next couple of weeks should be an opportunity for us to exploit the potential of our students. We have to make sure we are utilizing every instructional minute to push them to the next level. We have to double-check that we are maximizing bell-to-bell instruction. Bell-to-bell instruction should be planned with purpose and based on meaningful outcomes. This bell-to-bell obligation means we must provide all students a constructive learning activity at all times. The best way to plan for bell-to-bell instruction is by answering the four PLC questions: What do we expect our students to learn? How will we know they are learning? How will we respond when they don’t learn? How will we respond if they already know it?
We have one week before a much needed Spring Break. I want us to end strong by focusing on the positives. Thank you for making each minute in the classroom count! Thank you for being the best teachers that any principal could ask for. Every day this week you can wear jeans with your favorite Roberts' shirt or your favorite college shirt.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!
FOCUSED WALKTHROUGHS: SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION
- It starts with us, the teacher led group in the blended model. We need to make sure that we are increasing the rigor of instruction in our small group.
What does increasing rigor look like.
- This means providing our students more of a challenging and meaningful learning environment. We want to create a small group environment where students are thinking critically and actively employing problem solving skills. We need to allow our students the opportunity to struggle in their learning.
How do you support this necessary struggle to take your student further than ever?
- This can only happen if we preplan our questions. At times, we let our students off the hook by supplying the answer too quickly. One of the tools we can implement within our small groups is to check for understanding. Understanding is best gauged through a written answer. Written responses give teachers an objective framework for understanding when to move on and when to reteach.
What will we be looking for:
- Give students the opportunity to struggle
- Preplan questions and sentence stems
- Check for understanding through writing
