100 Days Smarter at Patterson Elementary
We are 100 days smarter! The R.F.P. kindergartners had an awesome time celebrating the 100th day of school! We celebrated all day by doing various counting activities. We figured out how many groups of ten it takes to make 100, and then used that knowledge to lace 100 fruit loops onto a necklace (in ten colors groups of ten each of course). We made a 100th day crown, sang and danced our way to 100 all day long!! We ended the day by counting and playing with 100 balloons in our hallway, and by eating a special 100th day snack. We had a blast!! Now we are looking forward to learning about Penguins!
Speech Sounds, Kennedale ISD Speech Pathologist April Ward
Have you ever talked to a child and wondered, “Is his/her speech normal?” It is common for children to say some sounds the wrong way as they learn to talk. Children learn some sounds earlier, like p, m, or w. Other sounds take longer to learn, like z, v, th, and r. Most children will be able to say all sounds in English by 8 years old. A child who does not say sounds by the expected age may have a speech sound disorder. The following chart is a developmental guideline for speech sound acquisition for English speaking children. For questions, please contact your school’s Speech Language Pathologist.

Making Slime in 1st Grade at Patterson, by Dakota Greenfield
First grade students at R.F. Patterson Elementary recently learned how to write a procedural text. We looked at several examples of procedural texts such as: recipes, instruction manuals, and steps for an experiment. Students then spent time writing their own procedural text about a topic they considered themselves an expert on. Students wrote about how to ride a bike, how to bake cookies, how to play a video game, and many other topics. We wrapped up our week by reading instructions on how to make slime, and then following the steps so that students could make slime to take home.

R.F.P. Elementary Presents, The Poetry Cafe, by Jana Carter
Fourth graders wrote poems in class to prepare for the Poetry Cafe during Literacy Night at RFP. Many different types of poems were available for students to study and learn, so they could write one that appealed to them. Some types included Limericks, Cinquains, Concrete, Free Verse, and Bio Poems. Students came up with their own topic, wrote a rough draft, shared with a partner to revise and edit, and then created a final masterpiece that included an illustration. After their poems were complete, they awaited the opportunity to get on stage and read their poems to their friends, families, and teachers. This was a great way for students to take pride and ownership of their creative learning. Students are asking for another chance to show off more of their creative writing. Another PBL (project based learning assignment) is already in the works!

Arthur Intermediate Honoring Black History Month with Daily Lessons and Acitivites
Teacher Karen Skinner has been using time in her reading intervention classes having students analyze a recruiting poster by Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History from World War I for African American Soldiers (1918) found on ReadWorks. They have discussed courage as well as patriotism, and what each looks like along with self-sacrifice and what it means. The students answered a question set regarding the poster after which they played a round of Kahoots to reinforce background knowledge (and newly learned) regarding leaders of Black History in a variety of fields such as political: the Civil Rights Movement), the “I Have A Dream” speech/author, the supreme court, ; sports: Major League Baseball, the Olympics, tennis champions; and extraordinary jobs such as working in space. (Black History by P. M. Kinsey). They have really enjoyed sharing their knowledge and learning new facts about Black History.
In Viola McLaughlin's 5th grade social studies class the students chose an African American leader to research, journal about, and eventually creating a one page summary about who they've learned about. The next step was for the students to bring out their artistic charm to create a gallery walk. Not only was it a valuable learning experience but it was rewarding for their teacher to see her students artistic side shine!
