North vs. South in the 1800's
Morgan H. Period 7
Why not to live in the North because of geography, economy, transportation, and society.
One reason not to live in the North is because of geography. You don't want to live in the North because they have freezing winters and hot, humid summers. Also, inland from the sea lay narrow, flat plains with a thin covering of rocky soil. So you can't farm inland of the seas. Lastly, if you were to farm you can only farm in a couple of states because all of the other states don't have good soil to farm on. One reason that you don't want to live in the north because of the economy. You don't want to live in the north because the have factories so there will be a lot of pollution. Another reason you don't want to live in the North is because the transportation. You don't want to because earlier ,when they didn't have train tracks or steam engines, it too a long time to go up stream with goods people needed and then some of the food spoiled because of the time. Lastly, you don't want to live in the north because of society. You don't want to live there in the north because cities lacked sewers and paved streets. Also, people were poor and they had no power. Plus, the diseases increased rapidly because society was filled with dirt and diseases. If you were a slave you would not be treated with the same respect as whites.
Why to live in the South because of geography, economy, transportation, and society.
One reason to live in the south is because of geography. You want to live in South because they have mild winters and not freezing winters like the North. When it's growing season they have plentiful rainfall and long growing season. The south also had swamps to make sugar cane and rice. Then when growing season is done and they need to transport it the south had flat rivers. Also, the south has thick pine forests. Another reason you would want to live in the south because of the economy. In the economy people owned farms and had slaves to farm for them, they mostly farmed cotton. Then when the cotton gin was made it made cleaning the cotton go a lot faster. A third reason you would want to live in the south is because of transportation. Transportation was good in the south because they traveled mostly by boat and there were lots of rivers to transport goods from place to place. Most white people were farmers and they had lots of money and then workers were the in the middle of the social structure.
