Believe...Growth Mindset for Student Success!
Our School Vision
Knight Vision: To share in the commitment of rigorous and high quality instruction to meet the needs of every child.
Our 2017-2018 school theme “Believe...Growth Mindset for Student Success!” is directly aligned with our continued vision and instructional expectations for Knight: to share in the commitment of rigorous and high quality instruction to meet the needs of every child.
Instructional Expectations:
*Workshop Model (Reader’s & Writer’s & Math)/Gradual Release
*Hands on, integrated Science, Social Studies, Technology, and Fine Arts
*High levels of Student Engagement and Inquiry
*Co-Teaching (EL and Special Ed)
Knight Mission: To provide a positive, stimulating, and secure environment that empowers the individual to grow socially, emotionally and intellectually in order to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.
Knight Belief: We believe all kids can learn…
…and we will establish high standards of learning that we expect all students to achieve. It is our job to create an environment in our classrooms that engages students in academic work that results in a high level of achievement. We are confident that with our support and help, students can master challenging curricula, and we expect them to do so. We are prepared to work collaboratively with colleagues, students and parents to achieve this shared educational purpose (DuFour, 1997a).

Physical aggression is at the top of our list. In previous weeks, it was shared that a Cool Down Station can be a great way for children to calm themselves down before they resort to physical aggression.
Here are a few tips for teachers who are dealing with physically aggressive behaviors in students:
-Never ignore inappropriate aggression, but do not get drawn into a power struggle with the aggressor.
-Be firm, but gentle. The aggressive child can handle your tough side, but he will succumb to gentleness. That's what he really wants—the right kind of attention.
-Deal one-on-one with the aggressor and devise a plan for him or her to take control of his or her own behavior.
-Be genuine. Successful teachers know that when they establish a one-on-one relationship with the aggressor, success soon follows.
-Provide opportunities for this child to act appropriately and get needed attention, give him or her responsibilities and provide praise.
-When you catch the aggressor behaving well, provide immediate, positive feedback. In time, you will see that the aggressive behaviors will start to diminish.
-Provide him or her with activities that bring forth leadership in a positive way and always let him or her know that you care, trust and respect him or her. Remind him or her that it's the inappropriate behaviors you don't like.
-Provide as many methods as you can for this child to take ownership for his or her inappropriate behavior. Suggest how such conflicts can be handled the next time.

If you need any assistance in dealing with these, or other behaviors in your classroom, please speak to your PBIS representative. We are here to help you!
