Back to School in a New Way!
Here are 5 THINGS you can do this week to get ready by August 26:
- CHECK OUT A LAPTOP: Elementary laptops can be checked out starting TODAY. If you already checked out a laptop last spring, keep it for the 2020-21 school year. If you don't have a laptop—or if your family needs more laptops (now 1 laptop per student!)—learn more laptop check-out times and locations here. Curbside and walk-up options are available. YSD has expanded wifi coverage throughout the city and also has wifi hotspots available if needed.
- TALK TO YOUR CHILD'S TEACHER: Your child's teacher will call you by Friday, August 21 to connect with you and share important information about the first few days of school. Please answer the phone, and we'll be ready to partner with you in a new way. Please call us at 573-1700 or email us if you don't hear from your child's teacher by Friday.
- LEARN ABOUT GOOGLE MEET AND CLASSROOM: Your child will use Google Meet and Google Classroom every day. Click on each platform to watch a quick how-to video so you'll know what to expect.
- ORGANIZE WORKSPACE AND SUPPLIES : The best thing you and your child can do right now is set up a workspace. Here's a helpful how-to video. For supplies, YSD will be providing a home learning kit for each student, but delays are causing the supplies to arrive in September (more info coming soon on our website and Remind). For now, please gather basic supplies like paper and pencils.
- CHECK OUT THE NEW BEAR EXPECTATIONS FOR DISTANCE LEARNING: At Roosevet, we are BEARS whether we're learning in the school building or at home! That means, we stive every day to Be safe, Expect success, Act responsibly, and Respect all. This school year, we have updated our BEAR Expectations for Distance Learning. Please review with your child so everyone knows what to expect. And don't worry, your child's teacher will also help your child learn, practice, and grow in these areas every day.
* We know how important it is to your family to receive a school schedule as soon as possible. Our first few weeks of school will focus on establishing these routines and expectations, and getting to know your child. A more structured schedule will be coming soon.
Curbside Pick-Up—Monday, August 24
In September, we are planning to host a second curbside pick-up to pass out school supplies and other school books/materials. Updates will be shared on Remind and on our website.
More Support for your Child!
We're excited to announce a new position at Roosevelt to support our K-3 students with social-emotional training. Mr. Josh Alexander will serve alongside our school counselor, Mrs. Lupita Mason, to provide muti-levels of support for all primary students. Mr. Alexander has taught 4th-grade at Roosevelt for many years, and his new role is part of Roosevelt's PBIS—Positive Behavior, Intervention, and Support—approach.
- WHERE? Starting on Wednesday, Aug. 26, you can pick up food at ALL SCHOOLS again, including Roosevelt.
- WHEN? New evening hours have been added, so you can drive through between 11 am—1 pm and from 5:30—7 pm at all schools.
- WHO? Only Yakima students enrolled in PreK-12 are eligible.
- HOW? You must show an ID badge to receive the meals ($5 replacement fee). Badges were mailed on Friday—do we have your current mailing address? Call 573-1700 to update.
