Why you should not put fertilizers in lakes and rivers
Fertilizers whether they are inorganic or organic can can cause serious problems if they contaminate freshwater and marine ecosystems. They can cause rapid growth of algae. Dying algae feed bacteria, which consume so much dissolved oxygen that fish and plants cannot survive. Some species of algae also produce toxin that can be harmful to humans

How to know if there is an algal bloom in the water
- Algal blooms can change the water's appearance from slightly discoloured to resembling thick paint
- Algal blooms frequently appear blue or green but could be another colour, such as brown or red. Algal blooms can also give the water a bad odor or taste
