Expect Excellence In Everything
July 22, 2022
A Note from Dr. Brown
Greetings Woodward Mill Family!
We are actively getting ready for the 2022-2023 school year! I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting with members of our Woodward Mill Community both at our face-to-face Meet and Greet in June and our Virtual Meet and Greet last week. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and or send me a welcome email. For those who were unable to join, please click here to read my Introduction letter.
As we prepare to open school on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, our staff at WMES are looking forward to working with you and your child(ren)! At Woodward Mill, we 'Expect Excellence in Everything." Our theme for this year is "Stick Together, Building Strong Teams." We will work within these teams to provide a learning environment that prepares students for success. We look forward to partnering with you this year and for years to come. We strongly believe that partnerships with our families are crucial to the success of our students.
Gwinnett County Public Schools will start the school year with a staggered scheduled. While school begins on August 3, 2022, only our Kindergarten, 1st grade, and students with special needs who are served in small-group homerooms will come to school in person. All other students will learn online.
I look forward to a wonderful start of school and a partnership that benefits our most important clients--our STUDENTS!
Sincerely,
Sonya Brown, Ed.D.

TIPS FOR MEET THE TEACHER DAY
- Students who need to register for school as well as students already on a class list (in the front windows) should enter through the front doors. We will have staff members stationed there to help you.
- If you have registered, go straight to your child's homeroom class. You will drop off your child's supplies, confirm transportation, check out a laptop (if needed), and meet your child's teacher.
- Make sure you have gone onto MyPaymentsPlus to sign off on paperwork and make donations to the school. Documents will be available for sign-off on MyPaymentsPlus on July 23, 2022!
- If you have not gone through the MyPaymentsPlus process, your child's name will not be on the list. You will be asked to complete the process onsite and then your child will be assigned a teacher.
- Click below to access MyPaymentsPlus.
- We do ask that you join our PTA. The dues are $5.00 per person. PTA representatives will be on hand to share information about the wonderful services they provide and to also sign you up.
- Spirit wear will be available for purchase.
- Thank you for your support! We can't wait to welcome everyone back.

Meet Your Counselors!
Chavonne O’Rear- This is my 13th year as a school counselor, and my 17th year in education. I have worked as a classroom teacher, but began my work as a school counselor because I saw so many kids that needed a little extra love and attention in my classroom. I received my Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Emory University. I have a Masters and an Ed.S. in School Counseling from Georgia State University. I am a Georgia Peach and love my hometown, though I wish we had beaches here! I love traveling, trying new brunch places, and hosting events for my friends and family. I will be working with Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth grades. I look forward to a great year!
Anne Woodworth- This my 10th year as a school counselor in Gwinnett County Public Schools. I graduated with my Bachelors from Emory University in Religion and African Studies. I have a Masters in School Counseling from Mercer University and an Ed.S. in School Counseling and Supervision from Valdosta State University. Originally from South Carolina, I moved to the Atlanta area for college and loved it so much that I never left! When I’m not at Woodward Mill, I enjoy reading, trying new restaurants, being outside, and playing with my daughters. This year, I will be working with Kindergarten and 1st grade and am in the building Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. I can’t wait for another great year at WMES!
2022 Summer Reading Challenge
We hope you have been reading this summer and logging your minutes for the Summer Reading Challenge! We can't wait to see how many students have reached the 500 minute reading goal and will join us for the celebration.
Once a student logs at least 500 minutes of reading time in Beanstack, they will be considered as having completed the program for Woodward Mill recognition purposes. At Woodward Mill, the GCPS BookMobile will visit our school as a part of our summer reading recognition in late August. Suggested summer reading lists and Beanstack directions can be found on the school website on the Media Center page. If you have any questions about Beanstack or summer reading, please email Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org.

GCPS 1:1 Initiative
All GCPS students will have a Chromebook assigned to them for the 2022-2023 school year. Students can also checkout a hotspot for internet access based on demonstrated need. Families may contact their schools to discuss options.
If a GCPS technology resource is assigned to a student and taken home, it is the family’s responsibility to monitor the use of the device to ensure the student is following the Student Conduct Behavior Code and to ensure that the device is returned in the condition in which it was received.
