Dr. Martin Luther King Day
I would like to take a moment to remember the hard battles that people have fought throughout history and continue to fight today, for equality and basic rights. We should not take for granted that each of our 438 students at Monte Vista has access to a good education and two free meals a day.
"I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits."
Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Oslo, Norway, 1964We are lucky to have a diverse student body with students of many different cultures, language backgrounds, races and ethnicities, religions, and abilities. While we have come a long way since 1963, we need to continue to work every day to show each other love, respect, and kindness and value our differences because that is what makes us stronger.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Here is a read-aloud written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s son. Let the Children March by Monica Clark Robinson recounts the story of thousands of African American children in Birmingham, Alabama, who decided to march for their civil rights after hearing a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. They protested the laws that kept black people separate from white people.
YouthTruth Survey
Thank you to all the families that have already filled out the YouthTruth Survey. 51% of our families have already completed the survey. If you have not yet filled it out, visit ytsurvey.org/crpusdfamily23 to take the 15 minute anonymous survey online. We’ve partnered with the national nonprofit, YouthTruth, to help us gather feedback about what we are doing well, and how we can improve. The survey closes on January 27th, 2023. Thank you for the gift of your feedback.
