First Trimester
Mother's Information
- Pregnancy test can possibly be positive after 3 weeks
- Pregnancy signs and symptoms are tender/swollen breasts, fatigue, frequent urination, heightened sense of smell, food aversions, nausea, high body temperature, and spotting
- Clothes barely fit and are tight
- Sex drive increases
Baby's Information
- Single sperm breaks through the tough outer membrane
- At 8 weeks, baby is about the size of a kidney bean
- 13 weeks, the little fingertips have fingerprints
- Also the size of a pea pod and almost 3 inches long by 13 weeks
Second Trimester
Mother's Information
- Starts to feel baby kick
- Baby's gender is determined (can begin to plan accordingly)
- Belly grows to a larger size (start to show)
Baby's Information
- 3 1/4 to 4 inches in length
- Crown is as small as 1 ounce
- Eventually grows to be the size of a grapefruit
- Heart pumps 25 quarts of blood a day
- Ability to move and hear develops
- Urine forms
Third Trimester
Mother's Information
- Due date begins to arrive around week 40
- Gain body weight of about 1 pound per week
- Visit doctor every 2 weeks (eventually leads to once a week closer to due date)
- Actual paid maternity leave is unusual
- Possibly have a hard time leaving the baby to continue to work
Baby's Information
- Bones are fully developed
- Practices breathing
- About 15.7 inches long and weighs almost 3 pounds by week 30
- Grows to be the size of a small pumpkin
