News and Information
Book Orders-Book orders will be in mailboxes Monday. If you'd like to order, you can order from Scholastic's secure website. There is no shipping and books will be delivered to school and I will hand them out to students. I'm always happy to make arrangements with you to pick them up if you would like them to be a gift for Christmas or another special occasion. All orders (online and paper - make checks payable to Scholastic) are due Friday, Sept. 14. Thank you and happy shopping!
Party Planner Wanted!
I'm looking for a person, or even a couple people, who would like to help organize our 3 parties this year. Basically I'd be giving you a list of volunteers to contact via phone, text, or email to ask for certain foods, a craft or a game. If you'd be interested in helping me out in this way, please let me know!
Refocuses
Please make sure you sign your child's refocus and have them return it to me the next day.
Jackets Needed!
It tends to get a little chilly at times in our classroom. Your child is welcome to bring a sweatshirt or jacket to leave at school in the closet so they'll have something to wear if they get cold.
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:50 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Homework
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
Your child will not have homework this year unless:
1. They are absent and make up work for the day will be sent home.
2. They are falling behind on Rocket Math facts, at which time I will send a letter to inform you there will be homework until they catch up and/ or meet the expected level.
Reading
We continued to focus on finding the main idea/ details and visualizing when reading. Visualizing means making a movie/ picture in your mind of what is happening in the text while you are reading. This improves reading comprehension!

English and Writing
In writing we continues talking about what good writers do. We also discussed ways and phrases that could be helpful or hurtful when we peer edit or use the rubric to rate someone else's writing. We did our word choice Taco Fiesta on Friday with all kinds of fun word choice activities! We made dragon headbands, searched the book Dragon's Love Tacos for great word choice, used those words to create an invitation to our own taco parties, watched how taco sauce can clean a penny during science, taste tasted 4 salsa's and graphed our results in a bar graph, line plot and pictograph. It was a super busy day, and I didn't have time to do a lot of pictures during our activities, but here are some cute photo shoot ones and groups eating their walking tacos! Click the link to see us!

Homework Help and Hints!
Are you looking for a way to reward good behavior? It is probably unrealistic to expect a perfect, no refocuses week from an 8 year old. Promising a big prize for a perfect week tends to lead to great disappointment here at school if they do have a refocus. Instead, try a goal of no refocuses 4 out of 5 days. Or, set up a sticker chart at home. For each day with no refocuses they earn a sticker. When they’ve earned 5 stickers (or whatever predetermined goal you have set together) they earn the prize. Prizes could be: choose what we are having for dinner, dessert, etc., stay up 15 min. later, time on the computer, xBox, tablet, etc., play a game with a parent, do a craft, pick a movie to watch over the weekend, or similar “free” rewards. If they are begging for a big, expensive prize like a xBox game, have them bank no refocus days. Maybe 30 no refocus days would be equal to something bigger. The goal is to improve behavior, not to decrease your bank account!
