From the Desk of Dr. Rodriguez
On Monday, April 11, we begin our annual achievement tests, the Stanford Achievement Test, 10th Edition (SAT-10). Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will apply what they've learned about test-taking skills and strategies by eliminating wrong answers; using text evidence to support their answer choices; interpreting graphs, charts, and tables; comparing and contrasting similarities and differences; and demonstrating their understanding and application of language and vocabulary. While an achievement test is an important part of a student's academic progress, it is not the only assessment that we look at to determine content knowledge. Teacher observation, participation in lessons, completed classwork and assessments, and overall effort give us a much better picture of how much each student has truly learned during the school year.
There is always controversy surrounding standardized tests, especially when they are used to prevent a child from advancing to the next grade level. However, we do not use the tests for that purpose. At Riviera, these tests are used for several reasons and in several ways because the information gained from them is invaluable to our teachers. The tests break down content areas into individual standards, providing us with detailed insight into the strengths and weaknesses of each student. Scores are also used as the first requirement to becoming a candidate for the Academic Enrichment Program. Conversely, scores that are widely disparate may be a cause for concern. No matter the score, rest assured that these tests are used as just one more piece of the well-rounded, student-centered educational program that we commit to providing our students with each and every day.
Have a wonderful weekend, and be sure to check out next week's Friday at 4:00!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rodriguez

The Magic of Art!
What would our world be like without the creativity and talent of artists? It would probably be a very bland one! Thankfully, our preschool teachers decided to bring the art of Kandinsky, Da Vinci, Picasso, Mondrian, and Michelangelo to our students and show them what it takes to create beautiful artwork on blank canvases. Students "toured" the Louvre Museum and learned that Mona Lisa really does follow you with her eyes! Preschoolers also used primary colors and white space to create their own versions of a Mondrian classic, "Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue." Finally, a class in understanding the works of masters might be considered incomplete if not concluded with experiencing what it took to paint the Sistine Chapel -- while lying flat on your back! What a wonderful way to bring the world of art and imagination to a classroom! Many thanks to Ms. Hughes and Ms. Rodriguez for this amazing experience!
