St. Luke Middle School
Indianapolis, Indiana
2019-2020
Friday, October 18, 2019 - Edition 9
The month of October continues to be a very busy one in middle school. Next week the 7th grade will participate in their retreat at Fatima House on Tuesday and then on Thursday, both the 7th and 8th graders will be at Bishop Chatard to watch the play "Shakespeare ~ Abridged". Please make sure all field trip forms are returned ASAP. We will also participate in our first Courtney Cup of the year for Handball on Wednesday afternoon and round out the week with the 8th graders taking the High School Placement Test here at St. Luke on Friday. And threaded through all of that is our academics that will continue to flourish! #StLukeStrong!
Have a great weekend!
Blessings ~

UNIFORM REMINDERS:
Please check your student's uniform. As Mrs. Borland reminded us this week in an email, please make sure your child is in compliance with our dress code. "Girls uniform skirt length is to be no shorter than 2-3 inches above the knee. There are several girls that must have hit a growth spurt, because their skirts are too short. Please check your daughter's skirt length (both in the front and in the back). If a hem needs let out or a new skirt needs purchased, please take care of that. Skirts can be purchased at Schoolbelles or online from Land's End." Thanks for your support.
- Sweatshirts: While the spirit wear sweatshirts are fun, and are fine for recess, they are not approved uniform attire during the academic school day. DC GEAR IS NOT ST. LUKE UNIFORM OR SPIRIT WEAR. The 8th grade students may wear their 8th grade royal blue sweatshirts, 7th grade may wear the red or navy quarter zip uniform sweatshirts or the sweater/cardigan option.
- Skirt: After summer growth spurts, this is a great time of year to double check that skirts are still fitting appropriately. The official school guideline is that skirts should be no more than 3 inches above the knee. (If you’re looking for an easy reference, this is the width of an index card.)
- Shirts: Shirts should be tucked in!
- Belts: Belts are required for all students in grade 5 -8.
- Socks: SOLID white, black, navy or red socks may be worn!! No multi-colored please!!
- A complete overview of the St. Luke Catholic School Uniform Policy can be found on the Parent Resources tab of the school website.
The Christmas Store
It is that time of year again! Every year St. Luke participates in Catholic Charities’ Christmas Store. We are asked to donate new unwrapped toys, clothes, and home goods. The ladies at the Christmas Store then organize these donations into a “store” in which families who are selected through Social Services/The Crisis Center can come and shop for a nominal fee (about a dollar). Each child gets a toy and winter clothes. The family unit also gets to select a household gift (crockpots, towels, dishes, etc). It is a truly wonderful organization that helps so many!
The collection for the Catholic Charities Christmas Store begins Monday, October 28th.Student Council will deliver all donations to Catholic Charities on Monday, November 25th. Remember that these must be NEW items and SHOULD NOT be gift wrapped. See below for the items requested per grade level. All donations are appreciated.

PREVIOUSLY SHARED INFORMATION:
HSPT
- Reduction of test anxiety since students are taking it in a familiar place
- It doesn't cut into a weekend, allowing for more family time
- October time table allows for key knowledge to be practiced and mastered prior to test
- Test taking strategies will be reviewed the week before the test
For those students who are not planning to attend a Catholic High School and would like to opt out of participating, a study hall will be monitored during the proctoring of the test. A parent signature will be needed for this opt out. But before using this option, keep in mind that these test results can support your students' choice of classes as they register at his/her public high school. It also helps build their test taking stamina for future standardized testing such as the SAT/ACT and high school ILEARN.
