Principal's Weekly Update
RAISE Goal: I have fun at break times by respecting my classmates and doing something positive.
Te reo phrase of the week: whakaute atawhai - Friendly Respect
Kia ora,
Wow, we have had an amazing week! On Monday we had Matua Lewis take us for kapa haka. He is full of energy and very positive with our students. This will undoubtedly lead to us forming a large kapa haka group that I know will go from strength to strength as the year progresses.
Our annual athletics afternoon was a huge success on Wednesday. It was fantastic to see so many parents and whanau at our school. I loved seeing all of our students giving the activities their best shot and the amount of encouraging comments that I heard from them throughout the afternoon was tremendous. I can’t wait to see them step up once again at Kaponga Athletics on Thursday.
You will notice that we have some building work going on at the moment. The Matapu School staff are now parking in the hall car park as part of our efforts to reduce traffic congestion out the front of our school. Therefore we have decided to put a concrete path in that connects our school to the hall. This is going to be widely used by all of our community members, but it will really benefit our students in the wet winter months.
Kaponga Athletics - Thursday 5th March
On Thursday next week we have the Kaponga inter-school Athletics day on. It is a big event and requires our students to be highly organised before going. Can we please ask that your child turns up to school in full school uniform and with a packed lunch, drink bottle, and sunblock already on. We have organised for the whole school to travel by bus, but please let us know if you will be taking your own child/ren to and from the event. We will be leaving shortly after 9 am with the intention of arriving in Kaponga before 9:30 am.
Just a reminder that the students are not allowed to compete in spiked shoes, our students are expected to stay with their year group and school, and that the playground is out of bounds for the day.
Teacher Only Days
As part of Matapu School’s commitment to professional learning and offering your child/ren the best education, we have four teacher only days planned for 2020. These days are part of the eight teacher only days allocated to primary schools through the Accord signed between the Ministry of Education and NZEI Te Riu Roa. We will be taking two teacher only days in Term 2 on the 2nd and 3rd of June, where we will be visiting schools in the Manawatu and Wairarapa. We will also be taking a further two days in Term 3 on the 20th and 21st August where the staff will be working with Bek Galloway.

Room 1
Room ONE have been learning some life saving skills in the pool. This week we learned to lower our centre of gravity when we are pulling someone out of the water. If we stand up and reach out to help someone who is panicking we might get pulled in, but if we lower our centre of gravity we can steady ourselves better.

Room 3
Room 4
We write great stories in Room 4 and this week we’ve been working on our Athletics Day writing. Here we are hard at work to make sure our sentences makes sense and our activities are in the right order.
“Yesterday was our Athletics Day and it was the most beautiful day. First we did relays with Mrs Guest and it was so much fun. Then we did sprints and it was easy. Then we did high jump and it was so hard! Shot put was cool. I liked Athletics Day because it was fun. I will never forget it. When I got home I had a big drink and a nap.”

“For relays we had to run to the cone and back, then we went to sprints. We had to do lunges and it was fun. Next we went to the high jump and we had to do the scissor kick over it. After that we went to discus and after that we went to long jump. I liked it so much. My team won the relays.”
