Purpose of the Camp

Auschwitz was opened in 1940. It is the largest Nazi concentration camp. Auschwitz is located in Southern Poland and it was initially served as a detention center for political prisoners. It then evolved into a network of camps where Jewish people and other enemies of the Nazi state were exterminated. More than 1 million people lost their lives at the Auschwitz camp.
