DOSS AWESOMENESS:
I was outside at dismissal one day this week and I asked a group of kids how they rated their day on a scale of 1-10. Five said '10' enthusiastically! One said " about an 8 -- only because I have had more awesome days". Then the kids went on to tell me about a wide variety of fun learning opportunities that they had experienced during the last week. They talked about Maker Space, VR activities, Topher, Reading Buddies, Assembly on the stage. They also talked about how they loved their teachers. I loved hearing their enthusiasm for school and their love of their teachers!
At lunch today, a student who was sitting at the golden table said "Ms. Griffin, we need to clean this table. My friend has peanut allergies and he can't sit here until the table is cleaned". The thoughtfulness warmed my heart.
Also this week, I received an email from a parent that said "wow, thank you for taking such good care of my kids. I don't know how the teachers do it, but she comes home happy and excited about learning everyday". Another email said " My son is thriving under his teacher!".
Our community dug in deep to meet the goal of $65,000 during the No Hassle Fund Raiser! Because they believe in us. They believe in this school. And, they are here to support us.
I mentioned how much I liked the great smell of someone's room. The next day, I walked into my office and had a glad plug in for my office! A teacher's child was sick and they had to leave school. The team stepped in without hesitation and took care of the kids when we couldn't find a sub. A teacher shared her enthusiasm about a student finally producing work and sent the student up to the office to share the work with me.
There is kindness all around us. Soak it in. Look for it. And, embrace it during the demanding month of October. And remember your "WHY". Because it makes all the difference.
Thank you for your daily dedication to doing what's best for students.
INTERNATIONAL FAMILY NIGHT:
This Thursday, October 12th, is International Family Night to provide our international families with information about Doss Elementary and services available to them. It will be held in the cafeteria from 5:30-6:30 PM. We will provide families with pizza and childcare and translators will be available. A flyer should have gone home to your international families in this passed Wednesday's folders. Please remind students and their parents so we can maximize attendance.
PPfT:
At the beginning of the year, we gave each of you a copy of the Professional Pathways for Teachers (PPfT) Support Guide. This is in your binder that I gave you.
Please be sure to review the rubrics (page 60-66) prior to planning for your observation.
During your announced observation, you are being evaluated on the following strands:
Student Engagement
Assessment and Feedback
Differentiation
Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
Classroom Expectations
Routines and Procedures
Classroom Climate
Later on in the year, you will be evaluated on:
Professional Development and Reflection
Collaboration and Contributions
Lesson Planning and Use of Data
Relational Communication
Compliance
As we go through this process together, I want to remind you of a few things:
1. Having a lesson plan for us to view prior to the observation is very helpful. Suggestions for that lesson plan include:
What are you teaching?
How will you assess what you have taught?
How are you differentiating for your GT, ELLs, dyslexics, etc?
How are you planning to reach the Problem Solving and Critical Thinking levels in this lesson?
2. Please review the rubrics while you plan. This will help you to know exactly what we are looking for. It takes awhile to get used to a new system! By looking at the rubric and reflecting on what is being expected, you'll find your plans will come together and you will be successful.
3. This is a tool for conversations and reflections about our practice. The conversations and feedback are growth tools to sharpening our instructional practices.
4. If you would like feedback on planning the lesson for your observation, please see your current evaluator! We are happy to help.
FIRE DRILL:
We will have a fire drill on Tuesday, 10/10 at 8:00.
SOCIAL DUES:
Please turn in your social dues by Wednesday, 10/14! Social dues are $10 for classified employees and $20 for professionals. These can be turned in to Marcy Hello or your team's social committee member.
FLU SHOTS FOR DOSS STUDENTS:
Once again, we are offering FLU SHOTS at school for Doss children. Last week the parents received information and permission slips for the Doss Flu Shot day which is October 12th. We will put a sign up schedule on the white board in the lounge. Please sign up your class. As we get closer to the date, we will give you more details and will let you know which students have returned consent forms.

ACCOMMODATIONS
As we begin preparation for our Benchmark tests in a few weeks, we need your input for what Accessibility Features and Designated Supports (Accommodations) your students will need to be successful on these assessments. If you have a student that will need a designated support, please complete the Student Form (gold paper) that you received at the faculty meeting. Please note the accommodations that have already been determined by the 504, SPED, LPAC or CST committees, however, if you know that you will want to make a CHANGE on the plan, please note that and let's talk about what we need to do for this Benchmark. There is not an online option for this first Benchmark.
There are additional Student Forms in the lounge, and you will be receiving access to to a Google Drive folder that will have a copy of that and various links and documents related to STAAR testing. Please contact Shanna Riggsbee if you have any questions.
WE ARE EXTENDING THIS DEADLINE UNTIL NEXT FRIDAY, OCTOBER13TH.
Below is a link to the various Features and Supports that are allowable for STAAR this year. Refer to the Student Form for clarification on what committees determine the eligibility and if it is allowed for certain students.
1. Accessibility Features: These are procedures and materials that are allowed for any student who needs them. You do not have to document these. The student should be comfortable using these features, but they cannot be “required” to use them during a test administration.
2. Designated Supports: These are locally-approved supports for students who meet eligibility criteria.
· Braille
· Content and Language Supports
· Content and Language Supports Guidelines
· Individualized Structured Reminders
3. Designated Supports Requiring TEA Approval: These supports require the submission and approval of a TEA Accommodation Request Form.
