Día in the Classroom: 8 Ideas for Teachers
by Lydia Breiseth & Rachael Walker
While public libraries have championed Día, it is also a wonderful opportunity to promote literacy in schools and to connect with diverse families around books. Here are a range of ideas, including a number of recommendations from Pat Mora’s Día Planning booklet, to help you bring the spirit of Día to your school and classroom.

Right from the Start: A Protocol for Identifying and Planning Instruction for Emergent Bilinguals in Universal Prekindergarten
Access to prekindergarten has become a popular initiative of education reform across the country. In New York, funding for Universal Prekindergarten (UPK) has increased dramatically in a short time following a pledge from Gov. Cuomo to support universal access to prekindergarten for New York’s children in order to better prepare them for school (Craig & McKinley, 2014). Increased funding resulted in the rapid expansion of programs offering UPK; in New York City, enrollment for the fall of 2015 is expected to exceed 70,000, nearly all eligible children (Potter, 2015).
Parenting for Academic Success: Learning Outside the Classroom
Title III Parent Outreach Services are provided in partnership with Dayspring Community Services. They include parent education workshops, home visits, family needs assessments, and support during the school events. One of the most recent additions, the Parenting for Academic Success class, is gaining popularity among the communities of the three elementary schools: Kerr, Kendall-Whittier and Skelly.
To emoji or not to emoji! Graphic designer summarises Hamlet using smileys as it's the ‘language of the younger generation’
by Phoebe Jackson-Edwards
A graphic designer has given Shakespeare a makeover for the younger generation with classic works reimagined with emojis. Jamie Rector, 22, has given Hamlet, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet a modern lift by redesigning the covers of the plays in her project Shakespeare Today, Jamie, from Bury, used her knowledge of the works to summarise each play into 32 emojis spelling out the plot.
Check out a new way to engage your students in the classics!

Former English Language Learner Monitoring
We are required to monitor the progress of Former English Language Learners (FELLs) for two years following their attainment of English language proficiency. The monitoring progress is now completed through Ellevation InClass. Classroom teachers who serve students who are identified as FELL 1st or 2nd year will receive an email from Ellevation Education during the week of April 25th to prompt them to complete the monitoring form for that student.
The monitoring form will be open for responses through June 1, 2016. Responses will be reviewed by the ELD teacher, as available, and the ELD team to determine if additional support is needed for the FELL student. Please contact your school’s ELD Coordinator for any questions related to the FELL monitoring form and/or process.
Action requested by teachers by June 1, 2016:
- Login to Ellevation InClass. Existing users may login to Ellevation InClass and access the monitoring tab. New users may use the link in the email to register for access to Ellevation InClass.
