Red Ribbon Week: November 11 - 15th
Red Ribbon Week! Please see the list below for the themed days and dress down guidelines.
Inside the Idea Lab
On November 4 in Library/Idea Lab we heard the five story nominees for the Buckeye Children’s Book Awards in the picture book category. This is the only book award in the country that is nominated and voted for exclusively by children. Since our parents exercised their right to vote this week, so did we! All grades heard all five stories in a variety of formats: video of the author reading their own book, electronic book format, read-alouds, and self-read (in 5th grade). After we had previewed all five nominees, we voted. Our students voted mostly for John Cena’s Elbow Grease but Not Quite Narwhal was a close second. Grades two through five were also able to vote in the chapter book category, which was optional. In that category, our students overwhelmingly voted for Dog Man, Lord of the Fleas by Dav Pilkey. After all paper votes were counted, totals were entered by Mrs. Stephens on the Buckeye Book Awards website to be tallied along with votes from students all over Ohio and the United States.
Third and fourth grades had special guests during library time that helped read to them. This fall Gates Mills School once again partnered with the Mayfield Middle School on their Day of Service. We had 8th grade students join our classes and read to us and help us vote and build with plus-plus blocks. Special thanks to Mr. Stephens and all of the MMS staff who organized this wonderful day of collaboration with the Middle School and several elementary schools in the district. Check out some fun photos below of the students and staff of the two schools interacting.
It's Cold Weather Time Again!
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately to participate in outdoor recess (i.e., coat, hat, gloves, boots, snow pants, etc.). As stated in the handbook: All students are expected to go outside unless the temperature is below 20 degrees or the wind chill is below 10 degrees. Generally, if a child is able to ride the bus and attend school, (s)he should also be able to outside at recess. The only exceptions are: a physician’s request, a written parent request for the day the child returns to school following an illness, or a request by the teacher or Principal.
We have a limited amount of clothing for students to change into shoud they get wet or muddy outside, so please consider sending in an extra set of clothing for their children.
Coats for Kids
We are once again kicking off our Coats for Kids drive as we head into the winter season. This drive has always raised an abundance of much-needed items for those in need. There are collection boxes at the school’s main office for donations of winter gear.
Coats for Kids accepts all of the following (new or gently worn):
- Winter Coats
- Hates, Gloves, Scarfs
- Snow/Ski Pants
The collection drive lasts from October-December, 2019. Thank you in advance for your generosity. We appreciate your support!
