Li River

For this topic's assessment, we were told to choose a landscape feature. Afterwards, we had to research on the location and formation. Finally, we were told to change one factor in our chosen landscape, whether it be climate or rainfall.

The Li River is located in Guangxi Zhuang, China. The Li River is a very popular tourist attraction for people who want to have a cruise. It allows them to see all of the landscape features around the river. I am focusing on the features around the river. In particular, the Mural Hill.

The main structure that I am focusing of the features around the river is the Nine Horse Nine Fresco Hill (Mural Hill), as it shows clearly how it has been developed. As you can see (on the picture), the Mural Hill has been developed by the dissolution of soluble bedrocks, thus creating this structure. The weathering zone is green, which is a moderate chemical with frost action. It may be very fragile in geographical terms, but it does create a very pretty sight. The main agent of erosion here is water. It was also formed by the erosion of rainwater and river water from the clouds and the Li River. However, this doesn’t just happen over a few days. It takes thousands of years to erode a mountain like this. Finally, there is lots of transportation of minerals and other salts from the river to the mountain. This links up with the fact that the river carries many rocks and stones that are deposited on the edge of the mountain.

The diagram shows that most of the hills made by the dissolution of bedrock have a source of water, in our case, it’s the Li River, and it also shows how when it rains, the rain causes cracks in the ground, thanks to chemical weathering.

How Landforms Change

Landform can change due to weathering, deposition and erosion. As stated in National Geographic: "Weathering is the breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals on Earth's surface. Water, ice, acids, salt, plants, animals, and changes in temperature are all agents of weathering." Deposition is when rocks and other items from the river wash onto the shore and end up piling up against each other. Finally, erosion is a process that removes soil, rocks, dissolved materials, etc from one location and transports it away to another location. So, these are the ways a landform can change.

Changing One Factor

Finally, we were told to change a factor in our landscape feature, so I changed the total rainfall, the weathering (which corresponds to the rainfall and the temperature) and the temperature. I also wanted to remove the water source that Li River from the equation, to see I changed the temperature so that it would be hot and dry. The weathering style changed from chemical weathering to salt weathering. Chemical weathering normally occurs in tropical areas and salt weathering happens in deserts and other places. The rainfall has drastically dropped from 2500mm to 100mm. To find what type of place it would be, I used the graph on the right, which was kindly given to us by Mr Sims. So, if all of these changes take place, then I predict that the Li River will look like the photo below. It would change from a humid, continental place to a desert to Mediterranean.

In conclusion, the Mural Hill is a very famous mountain that has been made from chemical weathering. This also shows that the Mural Hill would still be as fabulous in these different conditions.
