A Message from the Superintendent
Between Monday, May 22 and Thursday, May 25, 1,237 seniors will cross the stage and receive their high school diploma. Our graduates will then embark on the next phase of their lives. Most will continue their education at a 4-year college, 2-year college, trade school, or in the military. Many earned scholarships. Some students will directly enter the workforce with the skills they acquired in our career technical education programs. Below are some of the great schools, programs, and branches of the military students will attend.
A GRADUATION MESSAGE FROM DR. EDWIN GOMEZ, COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Dear Riverside County Community,
Starting next week, thousands of Riverside County high school seniors will be celebrating the end of a chapter in their young lives. As educators, parents, and community members we sincerely hope that our efforts in guiding them to this moment have both prepared them well for future endeavors and are remembered fondly by this graduating class of 2023.
Each one of our graduates has a different story to tell. They may have come from different backgrounds, already overcome significant challenges or barriers, but there are shared experiences that have brought them to this important moment together. Going forward, the unique qualities and interests they have discovered with the help of our schools, educators, and their peers, should guide them down successful paths.
All of our graduates have hopes and dreams, and a desire for success in the way they define it. As elders and mentors, who now may work alongside these young adults, it's uplifting to see the passion this generation has for making the world a better place.
Please join me in wishing all of our Class of 2023 high school graduates success and happiness as they fulfill their future aspirations.
Sincerely,
Edwin Gomez, Ed.D.

GREATNESS WITHIN BREAKING BARRIERS CELEBRATION
This past Monday, in collaboration with our partner Sharron Lewis, co-founder of Empower U Edutainment, we honored the promotion of our African-American 5th, 8th, and graduating senior class of 2023 in a celebratory event held at the La Sierra High School Performing Arts Center. Special thanks to 2020 Hillcrest graduate, Jada Reid, for delivering the keynote address. Jada is a student at the University of California, Riverside. Special thanks to Dr. Sharon Bennett and all members of our team supporting the Greatness Within program in Alvord.
Congratulations, students, on your success!
EAGLE SCOUT SERVICE PROJECT
One of the primary purposes of the Eagle Scout service project is to build leadership skills, develop project-management skills, and exhibit responsibility by completing a significant accomplishment. That's exactly what La Sierra High School Junior, Brendan Callahan, assisted by his Eagle Scout Troop did by completing his service project at McAuliffe Elementary School. Brendan led his team in the transformation of a storage space. Pictured are before and after shots, Brendan and his team and others, and McAuliffe Principal Mr. Aguilar and Assistant Principal Mrs. Fennema, who supported Brendan and the project team from conception to completion. Great job Brendan and thank you!
CELEBRATE OUR CLASSIFIED STAFF THIS WEEK
May 21-27 is Classified School Employee Week (CSEW). Thank you in advance for showing your gratitude and appreciation for all of our Alvord classified team members. This year, we are celebrating the theme Classified Professionals: Indispensable, Inspiring & Invincible. School districts would not operate without the many, many school district team members who play critical roles in operating and maintaining our schools and department offices to ensure we operate smoothly and efficiently. Our classified professionals are the backbone of our organization. Let them know how much you appreciate their individual effort to maintain safe, secure, clean, and well-run campuses, schools, cafeterias, offices, and department spaces.
SCHOOL SAFETY WEEKLY UPDATE
A fatal two-car accident occurred this past Tuesday on Arlington Avenue near RMK elementary school around 7:30 in the morning as students and families were on their way to school. Safety concerns regarding the stretch of road at the location where the accident happened will be the topic of discussion led by Riverside City officials at a Town Hall meeting at the La Sierra Senior Center on 5215 La Sierra Ave, Riverside, CA 92505. The date and time are to be determined. The accident is a grim reminder of what can happen when driving-safety measures are not strictly obeyed.
IN CLOSING
On behalf of the Board of Education, congratulations to the Class of 2023. Parents, family, and friends all contribute, in partnership with schools, to guide and prepare students for life. We consider it a privilege to have been part of each and every senior student journey.
The legacies our graduates are leaving behind will serve as examples for the Class of 2024 and all future classes. This graduating class were first-year high school students when the world practically stopped in March, 2020. They and all of the adults who supported them, are to be commended for their resiliency, perseverance, and hard work to earn their high school diploma.
Congratulations seniors for writing the latest chapter in your life's story. I wish you a life of happiness and success. Thank you for enriching our lives these past twelve years. To all of our returning students, I wish you a wonderful summer and I look forward to the 2023-24 school year. I hope you do too.
In partnership,
Allan Mucerino
