Keeping you Informed
Bobcats,
Good morning. Happy Memorial Day. Today is a day for remembrance of those who we lost in combat. I know many of us had relatives or friends that we lost in the wars throughout time. I am always reminded of the loss of one of my former students and football players Rick Centani. Rick was in my PE classes and was not able to make the cut for baseball and I talked him into playing football (it took two years). Rick wasn't the most talented kid but he was a hard worker would look for ways to serve others. An example of his service was one of the coaches ran out of gas and Rick immediately volunteered to go get him some. He came back with a can of gas and we put it in the truck. The truck ran well for about a minute and then it died. We asked Rick what kind of gas did you get? He responded diesel coach, that big old truck I thought was diesel. It wasn't a diesel truck but regular gas so off he went again to buy twice the amount of regular gas to help dilute the fuel so it would run. At the time we were a bit frustrated but knew that Rick was the only one to help and do it without a second thought. It is a story we tell of Rick when it comes up from time to time over the year years that always brings a smile to our faces. Rick was killed in Afganistan by a roadside bomb (IED) just over 10 years ago. Rick was set to come back and help coach at Esperanza when he returned from his tour. I am still in contact with his Dad and we talk a few times a year still. I tell the story as our jobs are unique and our relationships with students can last a lifetime. I hope we never lose a student to war or anything else but I know that will not be the case. We have a great impact on our students and this is even more true now as we are in a completely different setting. Don't miss the chance to reach out to your students to check in on them. Today we celebrate our fallen heroes from the military, but don't forget the impact each of you has on your students and how much they need you now more than ever.
