Principal's Piece....
I hope this letter finds you and your family well. We have a few new things starting at our school that I would like to share with you.
Next week, I will be going into every classroom to read the book Bucket Fillers by Carol McCloud. It is a book that talks about an invisible bucket that is above everyone's head. This bucket can be filled by others when positive things are said to them. When a person's bucket is full, they are happy and tend to fill others' buckets. However, when negative things are said, it not only takes drops out of the other person's bucket but it also takes drops out of theirs. Each student at the school will have a personal bucket that will have positive messages from staff and peers each week. We are excited to launch this positive program at our school. Maybe it is something you would like to start at home with your family. Solo cups or old soup cans work great as a mailbox bucket. As a family, you could decorate the buckets together.
Starting January 2nd, we will have a Raptor system that will require visitors of the school to enter their identification card in order to go into the building during the school day. Please review the details below on this new system as we continue to do all that we can to keep our school and students safe. Thank you for your support in this new procedure.
I would also like to personally wish you and your family a wonderful break filled with joy and family time. If you can, read some books together and play games. These are priceless memories to treasure. Know that we will miss your children and that there is a special place waiting for them back at Hawthorn when we return!
Finally, enjoy the details of the last two weeks below. If you have any questions, please contact us at 715-261-0045. Thank you for your continued commitment to our school! We are BETTER TOGETHER!
Mrs. Maroszek, Principal Hawthorn Hills
Hawthorn School Safety-Raptor Security System
For the safety of students and staff, all entrances of each school
in the Wausau School District will be locked within 5 to 10 minutes
after the school day begins and will remain locked throughout the day.
Visitors who arrive during the instructional day will be able to enter the building through Door 12. At that point, visitors must press the intercom button to speak to the school staff. Please state your reason for visiting the school. Effective January 1, 2020 we will be using the Raptor Security System. You will need to have a picture I.D. to gain access into the school. Your I.D. will be scanned and the system will automatically notify if you are able to have access or not. It will then automatically print out a visitor's badge at the office. If you do not have a picture I.D. you will not be allowed further access into the school. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Maroszek, Hawthorn Hills School principal at 715-261-0045.

Girl Scouts is Coming to Hawthorn Hills for Grades 4-5
“Girl Scouts is offering a program during lunchtime recess on Wednesdays at your school! The Girl Scout Reaching Out program allows us to offer fun, educational, empowering and innovative programming to the 4th and 5th-grade girls at your school. Girls learn about many important topics through crafts, interactive games, songs, and other activities. This program is an alternative to traditional troops, enabling more girls to participate in Girl Scouts. Girls do NOT need to sign up to participate. Registration is not required for participation but is encouraged. There is NO COST to register. We can cover any girl with FA. Girls will receive a prize when they turn in their registration form. Forms will be picked up in the main office or during our program.
During the program, we will cover many topics including Art, STEM, Diversity, Community Service, Health & Wellness, Team Building and so much more!
Please encourage ALL the girls in your class to give it a try!

Therapy available at Hawthorn Hills
Therapy available at Hawthorn Hills – Hailey Monk from The Centre for Well-Being:
Many children need extra support from time to time to deal with stress they experience at school and/or home. For children, if they are stressed, they may NOT tell you, but you can see it in their behavior: how they behave may change, how they talk, how they are doing in school, how
they play or behave with other children.
If you believe your child could use 1 to 1 time with a therapist trained in working with children, please call and speak to Megan Berger, school social worker. Therapy is confidential and is usually covered by insurance.
If you worry you may not be able to afford counseling, Megan will share with you who to call to see if you may be eligible for a sliding fee for your child.
Come and say hello to the new therapist at school! Hailey is originally from the Wausau area. She has spent the last two years coaching Wausau School District athletics at the middle and high school levels. Hailey has been working with kids in the behavioral health field for the past six years. She is very excited to come onboard the Hawthorn Hills team for the 2019-2020 school year. Go hawks!!

Please remember, if you have indicated you wish to accept the WSD iPad insurance, but have not sent the $10 (per device) payment, please send cash or check (made out to WSD) to the school office. Just a reminder, if payment is not received or insurance is declined; families assume the full cost of any and all repairs caused by misuse, abuse, or accident.
